Picked out to be picked on. Glynis Jackson (Edison)
13. April 2011 by student.
Federal Bureau Of Investigations
Bureau Of Justice
Public Records / Estimated Numbers
Florida Statute
When African Americans are shopping, their apperance draws attention to store staff. Automatically their singled out to be theives. To take merchandise without paying for it. I am African American and I strongly agree with other African Americans. I have personaly experience store staff on every isle I’m shopping on. I find it to be very embarrsing and humilating. To the point where I have even left stores to shop other places. I know that other races are being watched as well but not as much as African American or very dark skin people.
When shopping I have seen the white race steal more than any other race, especially their children. They just open candy, drop the paper and begin eating, parent’s are saying, nothing. Some even open bananas, eat apples. How much did that weight so I can charge you for it, they drop the peels right in the trash. Older white ladies, I see them stealing all the time. I would never tell on anyone, that’s their life. All I’m saying is why a certain race. Stastatics shows more middle, upper class white students have the highest pety theft rate during spring break. Especially in Orlando, Ft. Lauderdale areas. The florida statute 812.014 reads: first offense is sixty to one hundred days probation, $500 fine and restution if merchandise was not recovered. This stays on public record as first degree misdemeanor. This hurts job applications at any place of employment because it shows the company, that you can’t be trusted. Is it worth the risk? African American males show crimes such as murder, twelve times more than white and 6.6 million crimes such as murder, rape and assult is done by 20% or 1.3 Interracial.
White race commit crimes such as burgular, larcerny, and car theft. 27 million in 1992. I use these examples to show who really steals from stores, and it’s not the African American Race, their busy doing worse crimes. ( A crime is a crime in the eyes of the law.) The difference in long term situation such as seeking employment, applying for college, volunteer work, etc.. The White race has money to pay Attorneys and legal fees to have their records sealed, expunged. So their safe when seeking out these things. On the other hand African Americans usually are’nt so lucky, it stays on their records.
Im just saying, give all customers the comfort of shopping without passing judgment on what they are going to buy or steal, while judging them because their pants are baggy, their hair is dreded up in twist, or their clothing don’t look to appealing.

The Living Text Blog is Now Open
20. January 2011 by Mr. Andoscia.
Remember, what are the social facts? Social Facts? Social Facts!
Also, use the jargon that we learn in class. Incorporate the theories and perspectives as you are introduced to them. This will reinforce the knowledge that you have gained.
When you write a blog be sure to include your name and title. If you are uncomfortable using your real name please feel free to use a pseudonym. Make sure that I know the pseudonym so that I can give you credit.
Also, specify the class you are in. On the Write a Post page you will see a block titled “categories” on the right hand side. This will have Introduction to Sociology or Social Problems as options. Checking the correct one makes it easier for me to grade.
When you make comments be sure to include your name or pseudonym in the body of your blog.
Most importantly, have fun.

Drug Use by John Wilson
10. December 2010 by student.
Marijuna was the most commonly used illicit drug. In 2009, there were 16.7 million past month users. Among persons aged 12 or older, the rate of past month marijuana use and the number of users in 2009 (6.6 percent or 16.7 million) were higher than in 2008 (6.1 percent or 15.2 million) and in 2007 (5.8 percent or 14.4 million.) Hallucinogens were used in the past month by 1.3 million persons (0.5 percent) aged 12 or older in 2009, including 760,000 (0.3 percent) who had used Ecstasy. The number and percentage of Ecstasy users increased between 2008 (555,000 or 0.2 percent) and 2009. In 2009, there were 7.0 million (2.8 percent) persons aged 12 or older who used prescription-type psychotherapeutic drugs nonmedically in the past month. These estimates were higher than in 2008 (6.2 million or 2.5 percent), but similar to estimates in 2007 (6.9 million or 2.8 percent). Among youths aged 12 to 17, the current illicit drug use rate increased from 2008 (9.3 percent) to 2009 (10.0 percent). Between 2002 and 2008, the rate declined from 11.6 to 9.3 percent. As you can see the statistics for drug use is extremely high and is continuing to rise. Drug use is a huge social problem in the world today. I hear a lot of talk about the pot smokers tell me about how marijuana is a plant and has never killed anyone. Well that is BS. There is a study for this, increased likelihood for accidents is one of the marijuana side effects! Studies show that 6 to 11 percent of fatal accidents are contributed to by marijuana side effects. Other external marijuana side effects include legal problems, work and financial problems and troubles at home. Over 11 million people smoked marijuana last month. Many may not have severe marijuana side effects from taking the drug but many people will. Marijuana side effects include physical problems like breathing difficulties and deteriorating physical abilities. Despite a popular belief, marijuana side effects speed up the heart, blood and breathing rate. The body is taxed more and this speeds up the aging process just like methamphetamines do. The marijuana side effects from this extra exertion on the body include a higher risk for lung cancer, heart attacks and strokes. Marijuana side effects also wreak havoc on the brain when the drug is used habitually. The natural chemical balance of the brain is disrupted affecting the pleasure centers and regulatory systems. The ability to learn, remember and adapt quickly to changes is impaired by marijuana use. Depression often occurs with marijuana usage, which feeds into the cycle of more drug use to treat the pain created by drug use. This cycle of addiction is very powerful and users soon find that they cannot stop using the drug even if they want to. Marijuana is perceived today in society that it has little effect on ones health and it can’t kill you or cause addiction. This is a social problem because we don’t need people running around preaching about their addiction being good or has no side effects. We need to do careful research and leave marijuana for the people that actually need it and not for the criminals or degenerates that try to escape their negative outlook on their life. We must make more awareness for this drug. I haven’t even begun to talk about cocaine or heroin. Now thats funny!

Roseline Simon (ESC) Domestic Violence
9. December 2010 by student.
Some individuals suffer in silence for years before finding a way to get away from an abusive partner. Others courageously take a stand the first time an incident happens. Many victims will feel trapped and that things will get worse if they try to seek help. Every case is unique and every one is disturbing, whether it is a physical or mental abuse.
However, a vast majority of people will immediately have assumed that females are always the victims of domestic violence and men aren’t really the victims of abuse. Abuse shouldn’t be about women only. Abuse is abuse no matter what sex the victim is. Men assulted by wives or girlfriends are often forgetten victims because people don’t think it happens to men. They often get ignored by society and see their attackers go free because they get less support than female victims.
I think that Family Lawyers or all professional services linked to domestic violence have an important role to play broadcasting that there is help available and they can find a safe way out.

Roseline Simon (ESC) “Media Influences on Society”
9. December 2010 by student.
The media generate information as a network then publish information using articles, videos, and photos to a group of consumers, in turn influencing individual interpretations of the information provided while potentially influencing unrelated cultural and personal beliefs, as per the propaganda model. The media has a strong social and cultural impact upon society. This is predicted upon their ability to reach wide audiencewith a strong and influential message.Television broadcasting has a large amount of control over the content society watches and the times in which it is viewed. This is a distinguishing feature of traditional media which new media have challenged by altering the participation habits of the public. The internet creates a space for more diverse political opinions, social and cultural viewpoints and a heightened level of consumers participation which will lead to an overload of information.

Roseline Simon(ESC) Human Sexuality
9. December 2010 by student.
How is human sexuality studied? Remember that sexuality is a part of every individual’s personality, whether he or she is aware of the fact or not. There are multitudes of facors that encourage and lead humans to engage in sexual activity. The multitude of methods commnly used today to survey and study sexual behavior in humans inclde but are not limited to:
Observational Method-direct observation of sexual behavior in laboratories or in the field of he most common methods of studying human sexuality and behavior. For exampl, the study of body language and nonverbal communication has alwys been of great interest to psychologist and researchers. However, the most positive studies consist of those where participatnts are unaware that he or she is being observed, in order to prevent the “observer effect”, which changes the behavior of participants due to the presence of an observer.
Survey Method-utilizes information that is collected through interviews, surveys or questionnaires of participants. This method is generally used to gather information on sexual behavior and attitudes within certain groups of individuals or populations to gain more detailed perceptions, feelings and sexual behavior.
Correlational Method-enables the psychologist or researchers to view and examine relationships and correlation between communication, couple longevity, compatibility, and sexual satisfaction.
Experimental Method- enables researchers and psychologist to attempt conclusions between independent and dependent variables.
