Penn State Mess By Matthew Sorenson
30. November 2011 by student.
Recently there has been a lot of discussion on what has gone on at Penn State with the former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky. I think that this whole situation that has gone on there has created a lot of discussion on what could have been done. Obviously people that are associated with the Penn State football team have made horrible and unforgivable mistakes. I think everyone who was involved should be put in jail. Joe Paterno had way to much power at the University and that should never have happened. This whole thing has brought about a serious social problem.
One thing in the case that I have been torn on Mike McQueary. He allegedly witnessed Sandusky raping a child in the showers in the Penn State locker room. A lot of people have said “if I saw that going on I would kick his ass” and the fact is no one knows what they would do in that situation especially under those circumstances. McQueary has loved Penn State football almost all of his life and he has served them since he was in school attending Penn State. So possibly in his eyes he saw Sandusky as one of his leaders. It is almost like that military mentality that goes on in sports at that level. When I was in the Army I looked up to my leaders as if they could do no wrong. There was situations when they would do things wrong but nothing was ever said because they are the leaders. And I know that this situation is different in many ways but there are similarities as well. And McQueary actually said something tho Coach Paterno the next day. And obviously nothing came about after that. So possibly in McQueary eyes he did everything that he was supposed to do.
And another thing that I have heard a lot about in this case is the comparison that McQueary was in his early twenties so he should have done the right thing because 18 year old are allowed to fight for our country. As a former 18 year old soldier. In my opinion I was just a kid with a gun. I did a lot of stupid things all the way until I was 22 and by that time I had served in the wars and was even injured. SO to say that he should have been a man because an 18 year old is a man because they are allowed to join the military is just not a good argument in my opinion. And I am in no way justifying McQueary actions. But there are reasons that I believe he did what he did or that he did not do enough.
This whole Penn State scandal has shed a lot of light on in my opinion the most horrible crime that can be committed. And it has brought it to the for front of our society. And people need to know that if they suspect these things going on then something has to be said.

Occupy Wall Street…. SGTH
30. November 2011 by student.
To those who complain about “Occupy Wall Street” look at those sources. The people who are complaining are the ones who put themselves so far into debt or don’t even have jobs. They are the ones that chose to live outside of their means or are too busy picketing to actually look for a job. When you make $30k a year and choose to live off your credit cards and have a mortgage of $500k and a car that is $50k just to try to live the fancy life…Please don’t picket outside my job. And you wonder why your house is being foreclosed on and you are in debt. Now to the banks…They are a business just like any other company. Yes, they hold your money and provide a service to you but that also have to have a way to pay their employees and stay afloat. You don’t complain when you go and buy a name brand shirt for $50 but you don’t realize it may only cost that company $2 to actually make that shirt. It’s the same with any “Big Business” bank or major companies…They are there to make a profit. Big Companies have always been here and are one of the reasons why this county thrives the way it does. Take a step back and think…without these major corporations you would lose millions of jobs and America would lose billions of dollars. So who is right????

Domestic Violence- Melissa Andrade
29. November 2011 by student.
What is domestic violence?
Domestic violence is intimate partner abuse. It is what it is, there’s nothing good about it. Usually very strong overpowering and controlling people are the violent ones in the relationship. Females are usually the ones who are victims of domestic violence. Violence can be just about anything. . .
- “Forms of physical violence include assault with weapons, pushing, shoving, slapping, punching, choking, kicking, holding, and binding. Two forms of physical violence have been posited: occasional outbursts of bidirectional violence (i.e., mutual combat) and frank terrorism, of which the “patriarchal” form has been the most researched.
- Psychological abuse includes threats of physical harm to the victim or others, intimidation, coercion, degradation and humiliation, false accusations, and ridicule.
- Intimate partner stalking may occur during a relationship or after a relationship has ended. Of women who are stalked by an intimate partner, 81% are also physically assaulted. A new development is psychological abuse (generally threats) expressed through the Internet, so-called cyber stalking.”
When I see domestic Violence, I automatically assume it’s a male abusing a female. Men can also be victims of domestic violence. Females have a way with reverse psychology and manipulating men to confuse them. They know how to use the right words to make someone really think they’re nothing in this world without their significant other or they’re nothing and shouldn’t be alive, which will cause depression in the long run.Causes of Domestic violence usually begins in a controlling relationship. People just need to be prepared and look out for warning signs and symptoms. Yelling, kicking, punching, throwing are warning signs. Alcohol is usually the main reason for violence. If you find yourself or notice someone you know show’s fear of conflict, isolation, low self esteem, injuries that are UN explainable, demonstrate stress and blames themselves, then you should be worried and/or get out of the relationship. I feel like adolescents typically fear reporting domestic violence because they fear nothing will be taken care of right away, causing the attacker to attempt to kill them. It’s my personal opinion that I’ve gathered from life time movies and also friends who I’ve seen that have gone through a controlling relationship. And I feel like older victims in domestic violence just flat out feel like there’s no point in running away from their problems because they’re already old and feel like they won’t find anyone else and will end up lonely forever. There are so many reasons why people won’t bother to let anyone know they’re being abused. I think that domestic violence should be taken very serious. If someone reports that they’re being abused, they should be separated and kept under supervision until the investigation is over. I mention investigation because there are psycho people who report that they’ve been abused just to get back at someone and ruin someone’s life. So I know for sure that there have been times that there have been false claims. For those who claim to have been a victim of violence and ends up being a fake claim, they should be given the same punishment that an abuser would be given. I think there should be more awareness and fundraising to help those who are/were a victim of domestic violence. There should be motivational speakers and commercials of short stories. Even a TV show special to open the eyes of someone who may know someone in an abusive relationship. And to give someone in an abusive relationship strength to do something about it. Domestic violence is what it is. There’s no other way to portray it. It’s simply abuse in a relationship and 100% Wrong!

Teen Pregnancy- Melissa Andrade
29. November 2011 by student.
Every year, around 750,000 teenagers will get pregnant. Depending on the state, teenage pregnancy rates are incredibly different. Unmarried teenagers having children account for 24 percent of all unmarried expectant mothers. In today’s society, Teen pregnancy is growing. Statistics show that the rate has dropped between 1991 and 2005 but are on the rise again. It’s still a problem we face today. What exactly is Teen Pregnancy defined as? Teen pregnancy is when a teenaged girl (between the ages 13-19) becomes pregnant. Teen pregnancy is a tough situation to deal with because you face economic issues. Becoming a teenage mother means you lose out on your childhood early. Instead of everything being about you, it’s the child FIRST . . . then you. You can’t go and explore life and all the opportunities in store for you. After having a baby so young, you can say good bye to opportunity. You can say good bye to hanging out with your friends, or being a part of the soft ball team, dance team, volley ball team, etc. Most of all, you will miss out on your education. Therefore, causing you to have problems TRYING to get a job because your highest level of education is either at a middle school or high school level and jobs these days expect more than that. Most teenagers drop out when they find out they’re going to become parents, it’s one of the biggest problems when becoming a teenage parent. Teens that become pregnant are less likely to attend college, and then there are some who recieve help from their families which allow them to attend college. Growing up in this day and age, I’ve seen many girls become pregnant because they feel like it’s a “trend”. Some purposely become pregnant when they find out their significant other is planning to move away or has found another love interest, in hopes that a baby would make them stay. And some just don’t like the idea of using contraceptions. On the other hand, they forget that they’re carrying a human being who will be in their lives for as long as they shall live. Teen pregnancy is so big they even made a few reality television shows about it, “Sixteen and pregnant” which was followed by another reality TV show, “Teen mom”. “Sixteen and Pregnant”, is a show about young girls facing reality after finding out they are expecting a child. They’ve dealt with situations such as, Parents disowning them, having twins, the father of the child running out their lives because they’re too scared to take care of a child, contemplating on adoption and even dropping out of school to get a GED. On “Teen Mom”, they picked a few girls from Sixteen and Pregnant they felt would make an impact on these young girls. They dealt with situations, such as money problems, being evicted and finding a place to live, TRYING to get their GED done; which is impossible to do with a crying baby, medical issues on the baby, break ups, and new relationships. They made it very clear that babies are cute, but take so much responsibility. They showed how sometimes it can ruin a relationship that was once perfect between yourself and your parent; who you also depend on. I just recently found out that one of my team members who just turned 18 is pregnant. The interesting part about this is that she’s been dating a guy for three years and found out a few weeks ago that he WAS supposed to be moving to
Ohio in April. He is no longer moving now, because of the pregnancy. The sad part is that she works part time and does not get paid enough money. Her boyfriend doesn’t work, and since we hired her almost a year ago and learned about the guy she dates, we’ve known that he’s never had a job, neither has any motivation to get a job. He does not have a car neither a license nor permit and she have been the one to drive him around and pay for him all the time. My point is that it’s a shame that people bring a poor innocent life to this world out of greed, to suffer do to parents having low income. I feel like young girls make poor decisions like this because of the parents. Parents are doing a bad job showing their teens that there are so many great things to look forward to in the future if they just stay in school and go to college. They fail to let their teens understand that they will longer have freedom neither will they have the chance to just pick up and go out and about because of a baby. I can name ten friends off the back who are teen moms. From what I’ve learned, they’re stressed most of the time, they don’t have money or free time to go out to lunch or grab ice cream. It’s interesting how that “special” guy they thought was once “the one”, is no longer in their lives. Nowadays, girls are lucky if their significant other sticks around a pregnancy. I read an article called, “When Children have children”, which also mentions a few different emotional reasons and reactions as their reasons for becoming pregnant. Some may want a baby to have someone to love, but not recognize the amount of care the baby needs, depression is also common among pregnant teens, and others may view the creation of a child as an achievement and not recognize the serious responsibilities. There are many disadvantages in a teen pregnancy. About 85% of these pregnancies are unplanned, which in any population can increase the risk of problems. The biggest risk for teen mothers is delaying prenatal care or worse, some receive no care at all. The reason for lack of prenatal care is usually delayed pregnancy testing, denial or even fear of telling others about the pregnancy. Because the body of a teen is still growing she will need more nutrition support to meet both needs for herself and her baby. Another problem facing teen mothers is the use of drugs and alcohol, including cigarette smoking. Use of any of those can complicate a pregnancy and cause premature births and other complications. I truly care about teen pregnancy and would do anything to help lower it. Most teen pregnancies cause Child Poverty. You ask, what is Child Poverty? It’s when a percentage of related children under the age of 18, whose families have income below the
US poverty threshold. Children who grow up in poverty are more likely to have unmet nutritional needs, live in substandard housing, lack in education and basic health care, may also become teen parents, and be victims of crime and violence. Babies born to teenagers are at risk for neglect and abuse because their young mothers are uncertain about their roles and may be frustrated by the constant demands of caretaking. I think it’s important that schools continue to teach sex education, even include guest speakers such as previous teen moms who have had their share of struggles. It is important for these young children to understand the difficulties in having a baby. Maybe that’ll help reduce teen pregnancy. These young teens need to knowledge of sexual Issues, such as, HIV, and other STDs, Personal Values about sex and abstinence, Attitudes toward condoms (pro and con), And most of all, communication with parents or other adults about sex, condoms and contraception. I think parenting classes help a little, especially when you have to take home the crying plastic baby for a weekend. Adult parents can help prevent teenage pregnancy through open communication and by providing guidance to their children about sexuality, contraception, and the risks and responsibilities of intimate relationships and pregnancies. Overall, my purpose for venting about Teen pregnancy is becausei’m tired of seeing young girls struggle and end their youth at such a young age. I felt like writing about this, also caused me to read more about it online and educate myself more on the advantages and disadvantages of teen pregnancy. It also makes me see that even at 20 years old; I’m still too young for a baby. I’m still enjoying my age and the money I make to spoil me, and ONLY me.

“Get my belt….the big one” -Rishi Bajaj
29. November 2011 by student.
I think by now we’ve all seen the video that’s been going viral this past week. A video in which a father and mother are in the act or disciplining their daughter using a belt for what appeared to be some major family “code of conduct. A punishment worthy of illegally downloading music and a game? a profanity laced belting that lasted several minutes despite pleas to stop from the daughter, age 16. After watching the video and doing some brief research, I didn’t know what was more disturbing, the video it’s self or the fact the father is a Texas judge and he could loose control so easily when he’s been faced with more difficult scenarios on the bench hearing life and death legal cases.
This video brings up an interesting hot topic as how much is too much when disciplining your child. It’s clear in this video that the father, Judge Adams, was in and out of control of the situation and during the video you can hear the anger and frustration in his voice as he hits his daughter, ignoring any pleas of help or yielding of punishment. What made it come to this? Why wasn’t the family able to handle the situation differently? I feel that all the years on the bench, having complete control over people “lower” than he, had bleed into his personal life and it was coming out on video. A video in which was recorded secretly for fear of possible retaliation from her father. Hallie Adams, the wife has since left her husband and reconciled with her daughter, she left due to his increasing abusive ways, some of which were clearly captured on film. The fact that the mother has taken some positive steps to bring her relationship with her daughter speaks volumes about her character and intestinal fortitude. Using physical punishment in my opinion is a road that will more than likely lead to nowhere and possibly more physical action weather it be abuse (spousal, children) or punishment, “Studies of whole prison populations all over the Western world show that criminals who use violence against their victims almost invariably had violence used against them when they were children. If our society is becoming increasingly violent it is certainly not because parents ’spare the rod’ [1].
So how does one determine how far is too far as maybe demonstrated in this video. Many states allow the legal guardian of the child to determine what punishment should be carried out; such is the case in Texas [2]. Corporal punishment or spanking can in more cases than not be less effective than other methods. “Corporal punishment involves the application of some form of physical pain in response to undesirable behavior. Corporal punishment ranges from slapping the hand of a child about to touch a hot stove to identifiable child abuse, such as beatings, scalding, and burnings. Because of this range in the form and severity of punishment, its use as a discipline strategy is controversial. Although significant concerns have been raised about the negative effects of physical punishment and its potential escalation into abuse, a form of physical punishment—spanking—remains one of the strategies used most commonly to reduce undesired behaviors, with >90% of American families reporting having used spanking as a means of discipline at some time [3]”. There are other forms of punishment that may not be so hands on but may help bring the message across that what has been done is wrong without leaving potential lasting effects that could carry on into teenage years or adulthood. A few forms of hands off punishment could be verbal scolding, positive reinforcement of good behavior (rewards) or loss of personal items or free time. That way situations like the one portrayed in the video don’t happen, curious as to what the camera didn’t catch and how many times prior this had happen to warrant a hidden camera James Bond ala mode.

Our Grade: The Point System
29. November 2011 by student.
Having done everything correctly, I currently have a D in this class (118 points). I realize this blog will not be graded because it does not relate to a social problem, but I intend to do some claimsmaking and venting simultaneously.
I am 31 years old. This is my 5th and final semester at Edison. Currently, my GPA is 3.79. During four semesters, out of 16 classes, I received 14 A’s, one B, and one C.
Feel free to check my facebook profile for a breakdown.
http://www.facebook.com/jamiedallas
Feel free to check out the photo of my Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society certificate. lol
http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150105626952983.286807.587442982&type=1
For the B, I blame my inexperience with MLA formatting. For the C, I blame the professor’s inability to teach effectively. I am taking four classes this semester. I already know I have A’s in the other three classes. For the other three classes, I haven’t the slightest concern about my grade. For this class, I am nothing but concerned.
This is the most unusual class I have attended thus far. We haven’t used the textbook once and haven’t been tested once. Although I am a politics junkie, and I do believe this class has taught me a lot about managing conflict (or the inability to do so) and claimsmaking, I have not learned many sociological terms or facts which the text would have provided. Need I mention the cost of the textbook?
We were told that we would get extra points for anything we turned in. Including myself, my group consists of only two people. Every other week, we presented our proposals ON PAPER. I printed, with my own paper and ink, 8 copies (one for each member of the city council, one for myself and my partner, and one for the professor). I assumed that would count for extra points, but it seems I was wrong.
Also, because there were only two members in our group, we gave presentations more often than members of larger groups. If I’m not mistaken, I presented 3 times and my partner presented 3 times. (There were only six presentations right? budget, crime, education, statue, immigration, sex).
I spent about 16 hours and $25 on my scrapbook (not including all the color ink and printer paper). I included two weeks of media, two weeks of scholarly research, tons of pictures and quotes, and a SIX page essay. Another student spent about 1 hour on a free scrapbook, only did the media research (did not include any scholarly research) and wrote a 2 paragraph essay with numerous misspelled words. She scored a 35 and I got a 40.
Before the scrapbooks were graded, my partner and I had given an equal number of presentations. In that regard, we should have both had an equal number of points BUT I had perfect attendance and my partner had missed two classes. So, technically, I should have had more points. At that moment, we learned that I had 50 points and my partner had 55. As soon as we got outside the classroom, my partner asked me “how on earth do I have more points than you???”
I remember during one lecture, the discussion about Finland having the highest quality of education and how they don’t do standardized testing. Also, we learned about how some Asians were locked inside rooms without windows to be given their test grades, because it was common for them to commit suicide after receiving failing grades. Remember the talk about how F stands for fear? Well, I’m afraid for my grade!!!!!!!!!!! Less than two weeks left and I have a D and that includes 20 points I got for extra credit.
I have done everything correctly; I attended every class, gave more than the required number of presentations, provided typed copies of each presentation, wrote my two blogs, and even got 20 extra credit points …yet I have a C or a D????
We were told that we could get whatever grade we wanted. Also, that if we had an A by the end of the semester that we might not have to complete the last assignment. But, I don’t see how it’s possible for anyone to have an A right now unless they’ve written FAR MORE than the required number of blogs. Therefore, I assume most of us will HAVE to complete the final assignment.
I will be very disappointed in this unusual point system if the weirdest class I’ve ever had turns out to be the one that drops my GPA.
Sorry, I just had to vent and was hoping that the claimsmaking might help the entire class and future classes. Maybe I’m not the only one who feels this way. Is anyone else worried and confused about this point system and our apparent inability to “get the grade we want” and “avoid the final assignment”?

Samantha Fox: What defines child abuse?
29. November 2011 by student.
When children up, they are sometimes spanked for their wrongdoings in order to teach them a lesson. But would this be defined as child abuse? Most people think of child abuse is physically and mentally hurting the child for small reasons or none at all. But what if a child does wrong and is spanked? Should the parent/guardian be put in jail for simply disciplining their child?
Child abuse is a huge problem in America, along with many other countries. Some parents find it easier to discipline their child by hitting them or calling them names, as others find less traumatizing ways. Punching, kicking, pushing, or leaving bruises are what many people believe to be child abuse. Verbal abuse is a huge factor to many children’s psychological issues, so this would also be under to the category.
In Florida State Law, abuse is defined as “any willful act or threatened act that results in any physical, mental, or sexual injury or harm that causes or is likely to cause a child’s physical, mental, or emotional health to be significantly impaired.” This includes drugs, neglect, or failure to protect. Does this mean that parent’s will be rightfully jailed for spanking their child for stealing? Or vandalizing a home? Or talking back? Child abuse occurs only to a certain extent. Spanking does not physically harm the child long term, neither does it hurt them mentally, as long as it is done occasionally with a rational reason. Studies have shown that 94% of families has used this kind of punishment to their children. Spanking creates a fear, not of parents, but doing that act again. Simply putting them in their room or time-out may not help the long-term, like occasional spanking does.
Child abuse is a social problem. A problem that needs much attention and solutions for it to not happen. Children should not have to be hurt because of a parent’s unstable condition. Child abuse goes to a certain extent, not including spanking. As a child growing up in a happy, stable family, spanking helped my discipline. Once I got that spanking from talking back to my mother, I didn’t do it again. The proper use can go far, but excessive use is when it crosses the line.

Samantha Fox: Dependency on Foreign Countries
29. November 2011 by student.
As years go on, improvements of industry and work throughout the world continue to spread. America is one of the leading countries in developments in technology and conditions. The only problem is that America has been more focused on importing their goods, rather than exporting. It may be cheaper having other countries make the product than ship it here for resale, but the decline of jobs and increase in foreign dependency is a huge issue that will only grow.
An issue currently happening in American is the unemployment rate reaching a high. The economy may be bad, but a reason may be is the lack of factories and jobs to make products. Goods have been increasingly made in other countries because of cheap labor and fast production, this is only so because those countries aren’t as industrialized or civilized. Last year, importing has cost over 223 million dollars from importing. (http://www.census.gov/indicator/www/ustrade.html) With this money coming from tax payers and consumers, what will happen when these consumers do not have a job to even buy the product? This country is so obsessed with getting something for cheap, even if it hurts those around them. If America opened more countries and manufactured more products, that would give the availability of jobs a better chance and the unemployment rate to decrease. But then again, money only matters to those that actually have it.
Oil is another issue involving dependency. Most of our supply of oil comes from the Mideast, having absolute control over much of our economy. We depend on oil for several things: cars, machinery, heat, etc. It’s an extremely powerful resource and an abundant one..in other countries. Little do many know, oil is also abundant in America, as is natural gas which is another substitute for oil. Close to 65% of our oil is imported, too much of a dependence on those countries. (http://www.pickensplan.com/theplan) All of those Mideast countries that sell us oil have the power to block it and take control. The United States economy is centered around oil with hugh usage and a dependence on it. With those countries in turmoil, it will deeply effect us also. That power is dangerous, especially with the tension involved already.
This dependency on other countries is dangerous. It needs to decrease in time in order for America to be safe with the economy and other countries. As foreign countries gain more power in their manufacturing and resourcing, it gives America less control on our economy and more to them.

Penn State Mess By Matthew Sorenson
28. November 2011 by student.
Recently there has been a lot of discussion on what has gone on at Penn State with the former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky.

Jonathan Luna (ESC) Crime

Why is it that the thought of being in a recession leads most minds to think that because the economy has gone bad that crime must go up as well? When in truth crime rates have been going down for years despite this awful state we are in. A quick look at crime reports by the FBI show that just looking at Robberies in 2011 show almost 1200 fewer robberies since 2007 and the same goes almost exactly for every other category of crime. So why do we automatically fall into the conclusion of crime rising during bad economic times? Well there is a few ideas behind this one of course is the one that everyone thinks of first. “So many people are unemployed so they are probably commiting crimes to put food on the table”. Now this may be true to a point but it takes a certain bottom low to push someone to that level and to be honest with you most people dont get pushed to that extent the way people are so easily getting approved for government help. So what really is putting this mind set in peoples minds about bad economies and crime? Well the answer is simple its our media. Our media has a tendency of what i like to call is exploding their stories while cutting out important facts. For example as your flipping through the channels you might see something like this. “Thousands of people unemployed and police saying crime is rising”. But what they sometimes fail to tell you such as in this scenerio is this is only happening in Lehigh Acres not the country. They catch their audience with their big dramatic stories and its not entirely their fault because honestly they are doing their job they are making money. In fact if i wanted to make money i do the same thing but in my opinion i do believe it is their job to try to supply accurate information. So i do blame media but i also believe it is our resposibility to do our own research so that way when your having a conversation with your peers your source wasn’t ”ohhh i saw it on the news”.
