Derek B. “New Service for finding drink prices”
29. September 2011 by student.
I was reading the newspaper the other day, and there was an article about a new website that enables a person to search for alchohol prices and specials. The service is designed to target people 21-35. EBevSeeker.com was “quietly” started in May, and now includes over 1,500 locations in Lee County alone. A person can set up their cell phone or facebook to recieve notifications from the website, and you can even specify which types of beer you like or what atmosphere you like to drink in. One will recieve notifications for their specific criteria. The article raves about how great of a service it is, and I agree. What I’m not sure on is where the local authorities stand on this topic. As I said before, the article stated the website was started up “quietly”, which seems a little cautionary on the founders behalf. The website clearly promotes drinking, which could lead to more arrests and more drinking and driving. Both are seriouse issues, and I am definitely awaiting to see how this website develops and who may stand in to object, if any.

Gangs. Jessica Perez
25. September 2011 by student.
I was watching a show the other day about gangs in the U.S. and I was surprised to see that this is still an on going problem. I honestly thought that gangs were a phase back when i was younger or in the earlier years and that there wasn’t such a high rate of them now. I believe my mind frame was like this because back in my high school years there was so much talk about wanting to be in a gang or makeing up their own gang. Apparently though there are still alot of gangs in the U.S. and it’s really ridiculous. Bloods, Crips, Latin Kings and many more, because of these groups you can’t go near their area with a certain color or say certain things or even step into their zone without getting hurt. People should be able to wear whatever color they want, say whatever they want and go where ever they want without having to be in fear of getting shot. Why do these people think it’s so cool to be involved in a group that does everything bad? These gangs influence younger kids to join them in their spree of violence and next thing you know these kids lives are over. So where is the police in all this? Half the time police cant even handle them. Innocent people are dieing. What is the state and local government doing? How are they helping out? What do you think should be done?

Stephanie Santos-Self Image (Thursday’s Class Fall 2011)
21. September 2011 by student.
Is not rare to see now that children are being targeted with the way that they should look. This is thanks to all those TV shows that have children competing against other children for a prize that is way out of their league. In previous years we use to hear that teens were dealing with anorexia and anorexia-bulimia, has that generation passed the torch to the newer generation? Research shows that child beauty pageants train the child to be more competitive. The issue that was brought up was if child beauty pageants exploit children that participate or is it perfectly harmless and beneficial. Opponents say that this activity open the doors to hypersexualization in girls. The pageant have girls act like grown models instead of their age this actually says, subliminally, that the girls are mini-hookers according to magazine, Issues and Controversial Facts. The supporters say that these pageants actually builds character and discipline to the young girls that desire this hobby. It produces a mixture of beauty and brains according to the research and that it’s everything but harmful. There is no doubt that beauty pageants has been on the rise, but is it really necessary to have children acting like adults doing adult behavior? I find this completely harmful for children who’s standards are not being created to fit their abilities at the time. I find it unreasonable to put little girls in the situation where someone has to teach her how to look seductive. I am not against beauty pageants as whole but I am against in having young girls participate in them. The age will come where being judge by beauty, sexiness, charisma, and personality will be tolerated by many but for a very young girl is not adequate. Is not healthy for her self image and it robs her of her childhood. This problem in society has gotten so much out of hand that a mother decided to inject her daughter botox because her child asked her too and also because her daughter told her that she didn’t like the wrinkles she had on her face. The daughter went on to say to Good Morning America that her other competitors did it and that their skin had to be flawless in order to continue. This is why having young girls involved in things like this is really harmful even though it look inoffensive. If it were O.K to do this I think I will see more positive influence as a result

Infidelity: Hollywood’s way
20. September 2011 by student.
As reinforced in our social media countless times, the modern marriage is based on impulsive love and a combination of interests and is no longer a commitment. Infidelity in the marriage is an important subject in the field of human relationship. Its negative effects can reach many aspects of someone’s life. Its direct emotional impact can be very damaging. It brings instability to the family, as well as social imbalance. Work performance can be altered and in some cases it can result in a criminal act. It is disheartening that, once a trust in a relationship is broken, and another relationship is established, it is very common to realize, afterwords, that the investment was not worth the time, money, and/or effort. The benefits of a breaking a long-term commitment does not compare to the damages it brings to one’s self and for the children involved in the broken relationship. This is the “Hollywood way”. It always has been and it will always be. I think it is time for us to stand against what seems to be the accepted norm and question what is truly right or wrong; what is damaging and what is constructive. I wish we could use all of our energy, love, and self-respect to maintain or even restore relationships and to protect marriage, instead of just turning our backs and becoming arch-enemies of the one we once cherished, admired and were much attracted to before. The principle of fidelity was built along years in history based in experiences and results within society. It is the Biblical way to protect a critical component of our society: family. For the Christian readers, let me just remind you that in the background of a wedding, Jesus performed his first miracle. Taking this into consideration now, I strongly believe that He was just leaving us a “heads up” that He would be willing to help us through a successful marriage, even today, if a miracle is in desperate need.

Success-George Schwigk
19. September 2011 by student.
What is success? According to Webster’s Dictionary, success is an event that accomplishes its intended purpose. No, that is not the only definition; it also is the act of succeeding, or succession, and many other definitions. I see success as accomplishing set goals. Many of us have goals that we complete on a day to day basis, so technically we are all successful every day. “Can anyone be successful if they work hard enough?” This is a very broad question. Successful at what? Saying that someone such as Derek Jeter is successful can be a correct answer if you only look at monetary values or popularity. Yes he is successful financially and yes he is popular, but how much money must one have to be financially successful? I would consider having enough money to pay all of my bills, not be in debt, and have a little bit of money to buy what I wanted every once in a while, successful. In class we talked about the single mother, teacher that works 2 jobs to pay off her college debt, and nobody, maybe one person, said she was successful. It was also stated that, if she could play baseball as well as or better than Derek Jeter, that she would never be as successful, because she is a woman. What about the Olympics? She could play softball in the Olympics, is that not successful? The Olympics is on a world stage. I had never heard of Michael Phelps before he won 6 Olympic gold medals, is he not successful? I don’t believe there are any rules prohibiting females from playing in the MLB. In fact, if a woman was as good as Derek Jeter at baseball, and didn’t keep it to herself, so many scouts would be looking at her. Look at Danica Patrick, I would say she is successful, and before her I did not know of any “successful” female race car drivers.
At what point does one become successful? How much money does one have to have to be successful? How popular does one have to be to be successful? Is success only monetary? Is success only measured by popularity? Is Joe Shmoe lawyer successful? Success is comparative, no matter how successful one is socially, they will always have something they are not successful at. They will also always have someone that is more successful than they are. Everyone is SUCCESSFUL at something.
