Rosema Saint Louis-Teens Pregnancy

3-What are some ways to help the teens from getting pregnant? Statistics show that almost 1 million teens in the U.S get pregnant each year.1-      Talk to your children early about sex and love: explain to your kids the consequences when they get pregnant at an early age.2-      Abstinence: that the best ways for a teen not to get pregnant.3-      Condom. Condom is not really 100 percent safe, but it is better to use it instead of not using it at all.

Rosema Saint Louis- How to prevent suicide

2-Researchers estimated 10 to 20 million non-fatal attempted suicides every year.  They also say that the rate of suicide is higher in men than in women. There are so many ways to avoid those people of committing suicide:1-      Awareness:  you have notice when something doesn’t feel right and also notice if anybody around you has not been in touch or out of communication.2-      Respect their world: you have to see the world through their eyes just to know what the person is going through before you judge them.3-       Come from your heart and serve: means motive does matter.4-      Share the three core truths1- You are not alone2-You are not broken3- You are loved

Rosema Saint Louis- Homeless

Homeless is one of the biggest social problems that people here in the United States are dealing with. Sometimes people are out of a job, and that creates problems; as result those people have to stay on the streets since they do not have enough money to afford a house or to rent an apartment. In my opinion, I think the government has to find a way to create more jobs and construct more houses for those who have been unemployed.

“ I can’t believe we can’t find one man” - SGTH

Does anyone here believe we should be in Afghanistan? Does anyone believe that it should have been an easy war, or easy to find Bin Laden? Unless you have been living on the moon for the last year, you will know that Osama Bin Laden is dead now, and he was in Pakistan. I ask these questions because I think it’s amazing and Ignorant when Americans say “I can’t believe we can’t find one man” Bet those individuals feel stupid now…I think people seem to forget that the enemy there has been fighting there for thousands of years, that’s their backyard, the best technology in the world sometimes takes a while for something like that. I’m sure if a foreign enemy came here to Fort Myers people would assemble their pickups, shotguns and Confederate flags (if that offends anyone, stay out of this blog) Anyway, point is, people should be considerate, understand the situation and have the upmost respect for the men and women fighting there to give people the “freedom of speech” to say such negative things…

Lindsey Calligan: Indoor Tanning-A Social Status for Cancer?

Do you think indoor tanning is bad for you? Do you think people go tanning because of social status? Is indoor tanning something you like to do? According to the Skin Cancer Foundation website, “nearly 30 million people tan indoors in the
U.S. every year, 2.3 million of them are teens.”

I worked at a tanning salon for 7 years, from the ages of 15-22. The perk of working at a tanning salon was free tanning everyday. Did I take advantage of this while in my teen/college years? You better believe it. Now, I didn’t go tanning everyday, but I at least went 3 times a week because it made me feel better about myself. It was relaxing, warm felt, and it lifted my spirits and self-esteem.

Our tanning salon was booked with appointments, everyday of the week. Sometimes we were even booked up for the entire week, even if you called to make an appointment on Monday for that Thursday. Appointments were booked by mostly college students, adults during the Winter/Spring before vacations, and high school students before Prom. It was incredible, but also frustrating to many. I would get cussed out if I couldn’t fit a client in that day or that week.

Since working at a tanning salon, I have only seen a tanning bed, twice. Not just because it’s expensive, but also because I’ve come to realize, being bronze doesn’t make you different to others. It doesn’t change your social status, or who you are as a person. Only to you, does it make you feel more attractive and have more self-confidence.

Over the past 5 years, indoor tanning has been looked at carefully by researchers. Different laws have been passed in different states, a 10% tax has been added on to purchases of tanning packages, the legal age to start tanning has been set by many salons, etc. Here in
Florida, you have to wait at least 24 hours before you can see a tanning bed/booth again. Even certain tanning salons have their own set of rules, like the one I worked at; you could only tan once every two days, and you had to be 18 years old, or 16 with a parents written consent.

Indoor tanning has become an addiction to many American’s, especially in teens and young adults. But when it comes to tanning, most tanners don’t think about what they are doing to their skin, or what health related issues could occur from tanning, i.e. skin cancer. The Skin Cancer Foundation website states, “Melanoma is the most common form of cancer for young adults 25-29 years old and the second most common form of cancer for young people 15-29 years old. One in 55 people will be diagnosed with melanoma during their lifetime.” Not until the person gets back test results that show melanoma or another form of skin cancer developing on their skin, will they then care. Tanning salons should be required by law to have a written consent stating the causes and effects of indoor tanning.

Tanning has been proven to provide Vitamin D to a person who has Vitamin D deficiency, however; is it really a healthy way to get it? No. Is it worth risking the health of your body and skin? No. There are other ways to get Vitamin D by taking a supplement or by eating certain foods such as: fish like salmon, mackerel, or tuna, eggs, or mushrooms. People who say they tan because they lack Vitamin D need to realize, getting sun isn’t the only way to produce it.

Indoor tanning is your own choice, but before you decide to buy a tanning package, realize what you are doing to your body, and to your health. You can help prevent the negative results indoor tanning causes.
