Katherine Blackford, FGCU: More Public Schools Requiring Uniforms

Today in the Orlando Florida area at least 11 public schools are now requiring uniforms. The article from the Orlando Sentenial states that the Dept. of Ed. shows public schools requiring uniforms has risen from 3% to 18% since 1996. I feel the school is stepping over its boundries by demanding uniforms for all students. The schools says “ it helps promote unity, order and academic seriousness.” I feel it restricts young minds when they are at an age that they are learning to be creative, openminded and responsible for their own choices. The school will cite social stabilty as its main goal but I think it is too restrictive. Kids needs to express themselves and learn how to make choices even if it is only chosing what to wear. Social classification may also be evident by what the kids wear. But why is it so aweful to learn at a young age others may have more than you. It is a fact of life that most kids want everything and so it is good to learn to be happy with what you have and not dwell on what you don’t. It may be a chance to teach goals and that it takes hard work to achieve what you want. Not to mention its just fun to dress how you want and feel comfortable while you are at school.
