Unemployment Extensions (Edison) Kyle Schnaufer
Should someone in Florida be able to stay on unemployment for more than 20 weeks, 52 weeks, more than 99 weeks? Another extension was passed at the end of July. As the government continues to pass extensions many Floridians are greatful that they can at least put food on the table. The job market in Florida is bad to say the least. The unemployment rate in Florida is currently at 11.4%. The fear of some law makers is “If you are unemployed and you know that you’re going to get these extra weeks of unemployment, how motivated are you going to be to go out and look for another job?”. The maximum weekly amount for unemployment benefits in Florida is $300. The majority of people would much rather be a positive contributing factor to society and have a job then sit at home and recieve $300. There is no pride in recieving a check from unemployment. The question is how much time does someone deserve to recieve unemployment benefits? How long does it take to find a job? At what point are people taking advantage of the system? In this time of the “great recession” is it possible to find a job? For those in desperate need of their unemployment benefits hopefully the government continues to pass extensions.

Unemployment can be a positive thing for some but some do take advantage of it. You state that the majority of people would rather be a positive member of society which I agree with. To me I think you should have proof that you are trying to find work and if so then you deserve to be on unemployment because you are making a conscious effort to get into a better situation. If you are just sitting at home waiting for the check then what are you doing to help so why should you be given money. Does it sound harsh because people would lose everything they have? Yes it sounds very harsh but if they aren’t willing to put an effort into it then why should they get something that millions of other people are in desperate need of?
