Homosexuality Marriage
4. August 2010 by student.
I don’t believe that the government should legalize same sex marriage because I don’t think it’s okay for same sex couples to show their affection in public. I personally don’t have a problem with same sex couple but I don’t approve of their lifestyles. Sociologically speaking, it would be right to accept it because it is considered taboo and forbidden. If we were to accept things that are taboo, we would then legalize marijuana. Homosexuality is also frowned upon in the Bible and our government was based on Christian beliefs so why would we go against it? In addition, if we legalized homosexuality in America, it would cause a lot of problems in the society due to that fact that many people still do not approve of same sex relationships. I believe that majority rules and I think most people would vote not to legalize same sex marriage. In contrast, I do believe the freedom of ones’ right but we must also consider order and how would it affect the majority of America. How would America be like if we legalize same sex marriages? How would you feel if you child saw the same sex kissing in public? These are factors we must consider and not think of what is right for ourselves, but we must think what is right for our country.

Social Sites: Not so social!
4. August 2010 by student.
Internet is one of the greatest forms of communication, more in particular social sites. The affect many social sites, such as Facebook and Myspace, has on society is much greater than what was expected. From what was once a friendly site is now becoming one’s life. Social sites were made to create new friendships and reconnect with old ones. However, that made a full 360 turn and became a site that breaks many friendships and causes failures in relationships. It forms poor communication skills due to the simple fact that people who once use to speak face to face now write each other. Many people lose jobs and opportunities to receive jobs because of the things they exploit on these social sites. Although, this was not the motive the creators intended on for these means of communications society has developed it into its own personal lifestyle.

Katelyn Dorwart: Childhood Obesity and the School Systems
4. August 2010 by student.
Childhood obesity is on the rise. It is sad to see children who are so young and can not control what they eat because their parents buy their food and pack their lunches. Even those kids who do not pack a lunch, are not offered healthy options at school and if they are, they are not of very high quality food. The food is one of the major problems with childhood obesity and you can not blame the child but the parents who do not take the effort to insure that the child has healthy options to choose from. However, the schools carry just as much blame because the children who are on school lunch are not offered healthy options. At my high-school everyday we are offered pizza, chicken sandwiches, and nachos; the healthy options being old sandwich wraps which no one is even willing to touch. Would it really be that much more money to ensure the health of children? Won’t we spend more money paying for their health-care when they are submitted for a heart-attack? Not only are the food choices poor but more and more schools are eliminating sources of activity such as recess and gym time. I know for a fact that my little brothers had their recess time cut out this year. That’s ridiculous. Children can not be shut up all day in a class room sitting there. They need to have time to run around and be kids and interact with each-other, not get yelled at for talking to one another while doing a worksheet from a standardized test book. The government needs to stop taking money out of education because the children are the future and we do not want an obese society to be the next generation. It’s a sad day when the possibility arises that a child might have a shorter life span than their parents because the parents and the schools did not take the initiative to ensure their child’s health.

Legalization of Marijuana Nicole Ratzlaff(Edison)
4. August 2010 by student.
Why is it legal to smoke cigarettes or tobacco, which causes lung cancer & also causes problems for people inhaling the second hand smoke, but it is illegal to smoke marijuana? It is a proven fact that marijuana has less side effects, doesn’t cause cancer, and has the benefit of mellowing a person. Yet, the government refuses to legalize it. It could make the government money, same as tobacco, through taxing, rather than costing the government millions of dollars each year. People are smoking it anyways, so why not legalize it… or even better make tobacco illegal.

Should US Citizens Have to Speak English? Nicole Ratzlaff(Edison)
4. August 2010 by student.
My question is why should I have to learn to speak Spanish or Creole when I live in the USA and our native language is English? Why do the Hispanics or Hatians not have to learn English? I find it completely disturbing that they now allow people to become citizens of our country siting the oath in either Spanish or Creole. If you want to become a citizen then at least have enough respect for our country to site the oath in English. Americans don’t go to there countries and expect them to be able to speak English. When you call customer service you get the choice of English or Spanish. Signs throughout stores are in both languages. Where do we draw the line? I think if you are going to another country then you should be able to speak that country’s language. If you don’t know the language don’t go.

What a Waste? Nicole Ratzlaff(Edison)
4. August 2010 by student.
Are you a ware that the US makes up about 5% of the world’s population but consumes about 30% of the food. Of that 30% about $30 billion worth of food will be discarded. That is enough to feed an entire country. I find that amazing that our stores and restaurants are throwing away so much food. Why not donate it to homeless shelters or when it is close to expiration date mark it down in price. There has to be something that can be done so that we are not wasting so much food. Any suggestions?

Nicole Ratzlaff (Edison) Body Image
4. August 2010 by student.
In todays society we are told that unless you are a size zero you are not attractive. The media and runway models embed this into our minds. This mind set has led many women down the road of bulemia and anorexia. We are now a society that has little girls worrying about there weight. We have teenagers refusing to eat and if they do eat vomiting it back up. While agree that it is not healthy to be obese it is also not healthy, physically or mentally, to starve your body or to continually have stomach passing through the esophagus. Wouldn’t it benefit our society more to tell people that they are beautiful just the way they are? Why purposefully attach a stigma to someone for not being a size zero?

Harrise Aliance. ESC. Form A line please
4. August 2010 by student.
One of many things I have learned in this country is American always ready to form a line when waiting for something without being told to do so. How many times you go an ATM and fine someone there asking people to get in a line “HARDLY EVER.” I have traveled to several countries, most of the people I have encountered will come and stand beside you, and the next one on your other side before you know it, you’ll surrounded by stranger. In America where ever you go, you’ll a see a waiting line is formed, whether it is in the cafeteria, at the Bank, at the fast-food, or to get in the train. I don’t think this good behavior in the American society was taught in school. It’s just one another AMERICAN conduct that is beneficial to the whole society.
