Katherine Blackford, FGCU: More Public Schools Requiring Uniforms

Today in the Orlando Florida area at least 11 public schools are now requiring uniforms. The article from the Orlando Sentenial states that the Dept. of Ed. shows public schools requiring uniforms has risen from 3% to 18% since 1996. I feel the school is stepping over its boundries by demanding uniforms for all students. The schools says “ it helps promote unity, order and academic seriousness.” I feel it restricts young minds when they are at an age that they are learning to be creative, openminded and responsible for their own choices. The school will cite social stabilty as its main goal but I think it is too restrictive. Kids needs to express themselves and learn how to make choices even if it is only chosing what to wear. Social classification may also be evident by what the kids wear. But why is it so aweful to learn at a young age others may have more than you. It is a fact of life that most kids want everything and so it is good to learn to be happy with what you have and not dwell on what you don’t. It may be a chance to teach goals and that it takes hard work to achieve what you want. Not to mention its just fun to dress how you want and feel comfortable while you are at school.

Zachary Martell (FGCU): Should immigration from Cuba to Florida be illegal?

OK from the perspective of an adult who has live in Florida for 19 years, I think the “wet feet, dry feet policy” or so called Cuban Adjustment Act is a joke. Understood that the immigration mainly comes from Mexicans illegally coming to the US from the Mexican Border. But what makes Cubans any better than Mexicans. Sure during the Clinton presidency, the agreement with Castro was that a Cuban were to reach American soil, they would be allowed legally to have a residency in Florida for a year. But since most of the Cubans migrate to Miami, Miami has become well over populated and the idea of competition has put many out on the streets and struggling to get by. In the 1980s there wasSo if you ask from my perspective, a perspective of a Miami, Floridian I do believe that the “wet feet, dry feet policy” should be illegal. If this were to change, then there would most likely be more stability in Miami, Florida.

Thomas Grimes Edison State College “Whose God Mr Beck?”

This weekend Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin held a rally in Washington D.C to bring about a conservative change in America. Beck and Palin have spearheaded an effort to return our country back to what they deem to be Americas “Traditional Godly Values”. Now look, I am all for change in America, after all we have been changing the way we do things in this country since its foundation. Change is and always will be occurring in a country where people are allowed to choose their leaders. This ability is a blessing and we should be happy to have it as many people in other nations do not. My beef with the Beck -Palin crowd is they seem to have defined for others exactly who “God” is. Both have expressed that they believe God to be the God of Christianity. The problem in doing this is that they are two very influential people who are taking  Christian values and attempting to bring them into the political arena. Its Ok to have whatever faith you wish. But, when you have such a powerful voice in Americas media and airwaves it should be your responsibility Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin to not shove your idea of who God is and what he stands for down the throats of America. It is your job however to bring about dialogue which can bring about job creation, defense from our enemies and overall general protection to the common people of America. But for Pete sake! Keep religion out of it! Not everyone follows the God of the Mormons Beck! If Beck is unable to figure that out, then how should we ever trust him and Palin to give us solutions that will make a real difference in Americas economy and way of life? Please send me your comments on the subject.

MIMI ( EDISON ): SAFER DRIVERS SENIORS VS TEENAGERS

What  makes driving safer? Having less seniors on the road or less teenagers on the road. It all depends.  Statistically teenagers have a higher risk to be involved in a car accident. New teenage drivers tend to speed, take more risk, and talk on the cell phone/text while driving. Which in this case a  parent has  the choice to decide whether their teenager is responsible enough to be behind the wheel. On the other hand, seniors are a more experience driver but they are more likely to be involved in a fatal accident.Sometimes even being a precautious driver can lead into accidents.  There have been situations where seniors drive too slow or lane changing without looking, reason being seniors health depletes over time such as mental or health conditions ( vision, hearing, judgment etc).  Should there be a requirement for seniors at a certain age to retake a driving exam?

Thomas Grimes Edison State “Bankruptcy University the Truth on for Profit Education”

In the past several months there has been a major effort by the Obama administration to show that for profit schools such as University of Phoenix and Kaplan University for example are giving students false information and hopes when recruiting them to attend their schools. Data from these for profit schools have recently shown that the students ability to repay the loans which they have borrowed from the Federal Government  are very often not repaid and in default. These for profit education schools are also shown to charge far more than that of a community colleges and public universities for the same courses. The for profit schools of this type often are only online and often charge more than private well recognized ivy league schools in many cases for credit hours taken. The Department of Education has recently stopped short of calling the schools fraudulent scams and are considering cutting their ability to receive Federal funds from the government. The schools state that they are being targeted and that they provide a necessary service to students who cannot attend traditional colleges. They state that if they are cut from Federal funding, which can often be 90% of the schools income that the government will perhaps in effect put them out of business. They state this would leave their current students without degrees and in deep debt with nothing to show for it, and may plan to sue if they are shut down for the loss in revenue. I want to know what others think about this dilemma please leave comments. I have posted some links to articles below on the topic.

Hoarders by Desiree Courtney (edison)

Hoarders are hard to live with by far. They keep practically everything because they are emotionally attached to their posessions. A lot of times when a hoarder wants to stop their habbit they’ll reach out to their family or to friends or even appearing on the show Hoarders on A&E. This show shows what hoarding does to the hoarder’s family but mainly focuses on the psychological problems of these participants. Many times they have their posessions filling every family members room stacked and stacked at least 3 feet high. Hoarders feel like their in their comfort zone when they’re home because they are surrounded by everything that means something and i mean everything even crap they don’t even think they’ll use. It can get so out of control living conditions become dangerous. The hoarders who have a family and/or pets might even face the risk of having their animals taken away based on what the police or animal police observe.

Smelling Smarter-David Adler-Edison State

The NY Times article “A Slimmer You May be a Whiff Away”(June, 2009) Abby Ellin explains that by seducing scents may lead to weight loss..  First I feel that Sensa is mostly a mental substance that can help and hurt an appetite.  For years people have said that by sucking on a mint will make you think better and smarter while taking a test.  I believe this is true in this case with smell being a factor in a person’s mentality.  Scent to me is what attracts me to certain foods, and at times is my determining factor on the food im going to be eating that day.  I believe when they said that eliminating the smell of a food would decrease your appetite. For example chocolate is so good because it smells amazing.  If you changed the smell of chocolate to garbage it would be less intriguing and would not attract my appetite.  I feel that smell is a major factor in how much you would eat of something or even decrease your appetite by alleviating that amazing smell of fresh food.

Barbie Bilo (Edison): Road Rage

In drivers education classes, they teach you about the road rules and all of the basic fundamentals of a car. However, in drivers Ed. they don’t teach you how deal with a reckless driver, other than to just get away. This doesn’t seem to be a very good idea. By simply getting out of the way you are leaving that reckless driver to possibly do damage somewhere down the road…literally. In most drivers education classes, half the time is spent on the law, another portion is driving, and the rest is a course on drunk driving and other things like texting while driving. But what people don’t seem to understand is anger can influence your judgement just as much as texting can. Yet Road Rage was never mentioned during any of the driver’s education sessions I attended. Not one word was said about how to deal with an angry driver or how to keep yourself from being the one that’s angry. Most of the time people try to be courteous to other drivers by letting them merge and so on. But so many people have their own agendas these days and it’s easy to get frustrated with the general population.  Why has there not been any time set aside for such situations?
