What dose an immigrant look like? Dylan Carbone (edison)
The state of Arizona had passed a bill and has made a law allowing law enforcement to question anyone they suspect of being an illegal immigrant. Obviously this law is directed at the illegal Mexican immigrants that cross the boarder everyday but isn’t this discriminatory? It allows law enforcement to question and ask for identification if they suspect a person of being an illegal. Hypothetically if a Swedish or any other nations illegal immigrant was in Arizona (white man/woman) i don’t believe that that person would be stopped and asked for their papers. This law while not radically harmful and with good intentions is still not right. To have a law that is not clearly defined in writing and is based on a social construct is ludicrous. This law is pretty much what was done to the Jews in the 30’s and 40’s in Germany and Nazi controlled Europe. According to the Nazi party if you had a big nose you were a Jew. How can a social construct be the biases for a law? It can not and should not. You may say that you can tell what an illegal looks like but sadly your wrong. Whats even more depressing is that the Governor of Arizona, Jan Brewer, can not tell what an illegal looks like, as stated in one of her speeches, but still passed a bias and overall discriminatory law.

This really bothers me. They way its being explained is that those questioned just need to provide their identification to the police, no big deal. The police have the right to detain (in jail) those without proper ID. The fact that this targets the hispanic community is wrong. There needs to be a solution to immigration, but this is not it. This new law will be abused by the police. No way around it. If the focus were illegal Hatians, and all those with dark skin were to be questioned, I imagine this would be receiving more of a backlash than it is.

You’re absolutely right to question this law. While it was done with good intentions, it can only have negative effects. As you had asked “What does an illegal immigrant look like?”. How can you answer that question in any detail? The fact that such a loosely worded bill became a law is outrageous. The new law gives discriminatory powers to the police, and they’re now fully within their rights to use them.
