Vanessa Rojas:Edison:Edison’s College Work Study Employees

Im not sure if most of you will feel the same way about this critisism but the opportunity that the alumni at our school is able to work while in school, to make a couple of bucks maybe for gas or lunch is great and I totally appreciate the fact that we are able to do that. What I do have a problem with is the fact that they have most students working in the registrar’s office, financial aid, and advising.

In several occurrences I have ran into conflicts trying to get the right answers and getting the right information from student body personnel. It has occurred that I have signed up for the wrong courses or even just mal-informed. Being  freshman and trying to just get used to college in general is pretty frustrating but asking someone working for your school and them giving you the wrong instructions is even more of a stress.

I beleive that we should have trained well qualified employees to be working in these offices. I can relate this to a sociological problem in our schools organization and interaction. We must be able to all be well connected and informed about our personal choices guiding us to our future.

I think its a good idea to give students the opportunity to work while taking classes too. However you have a valid point with needing trained individuals in areas such as advising and registration. I encountered the same problem entering college with no idea, then being misinformed on top of that. I still continue to get the run around depending on who I deal with in the student offices. It can be very frustrating trying to get the correct answers from someone who only knows a little more than I would about the situation. Although this is a positive thing to help students while in school, there should be limits to what situations these students can work with us.

Vanessa, I agree to a certain extent. I am a freshmen and I had no idea where to go or who to see. I was given misleading information by some students as well. For the students working in those departments, it is a learning experience. However, they should not be able to deal with certain situations that can lead you to the wrong path such as classes for a particular major. I have learned if I am not satisfied with a response by a student working in one of those areas, to make an appointment with an actual adviser. That may be hard for those who are time constricted, but it is worth the wait to speak to someone who actually knows. Good blog though, never thought of this as a social problem! Valid points! :-)

Opps, sorry for the two prior attempts to post comment:)
Okay, I totally agree that for a student to work at the same college they attend is great. But I believe they should not be placed in some of the most important areas such as admissions or guidance unless they have been trained properly and know exactly what they are doing. Going back to college can be very draining at any age, and the less loops you have to jump through as far as being confused and not getting precise answers the better.
