Patel (FGCU): Texting While Driving
American Automobile Association’s statistics show that car and traffic accidents are the leading causes of death of people between the ages of 15 to 20. They also state that 46 percent of teen’s text message while driving. With these kinds of statistics it is hard to believe more laws are not made to prevent texting while driving. Only 23 states plus Washington D.C. and Guam have laws against texting while driving. Even though drinking and driving is outlawed everywhere, texting is not. Yet certain studies show that texting while driving is equivalent to driving while drunk. Texting while driving is about 6 times more likely to result in an accident than driving while intoxicated.
Although most of the accusations of texting and driving are pointed towards teenagers, many adults also contribute to the problem. One-fifth of experienced adult drivers in the United States send text messages while driving.
Yet even with laws prohibiting this problem, it is almost guaranteed to continue, just as drunk driving still occurs. After doing some research, I found a pretty fool proof method that could be the first step to solving this rising problem. Jonathan Young from Jacksonville, Florida came up with “Textecution.” This $40 product disables phone’s internet and texting functions when a person is traveling at 10 miles per hour or more. I truly believe this invention is worth every dollar and could bring about a wave of text free driving products.

Texting while driving is very dangerous. A friend of mine was texting while she was driving the other day and was not paying attention to the road and she hit a tree. She was not seriously injured, she did get the nissan emblame imprinted on her arm. Im not sure if its a premanet scare but for the time being it is a remider to her and all of us to not text and drive. I agree that we need harsher prunishments.

The state of Iowa has just enacted a ban on texting while driving that will go into effect on July 1st. They will not be issuing tickets for the first year, just warnings, but it’s a step toward safer roads for everyone.

I also think it’s interesting to consider how the in-dash navigation systems that are so popular right now could lead to more accidents. I know some of them will not operate while the vehicle is in motion (rendering them pretty much useless) while others use verbal directions to try to reduce the distraction. Still, it’s a feature I don’t want in my car!

Texting while driving is extremely dangerous. Hopefully these types of statistics will encourage people to wait until they arrive at their destination to write that text message.

It seems like half of the accidents you hear about every year are related to distracted driving anymore. Something has got to change!
