Melanie Conway(FGCU)-Gun Control

Gun control seems to be a very heated debate in this country at this point in time. My motto is I’d rather have one than be caught without one. I do believe there should be strict rules on carrying them and making sure that every weapon that someone owns is legally registered. I feel that this is beginning to become a heated topic because everyone in society views the instability of the society on out of control gun crimes.. I don’t think that this is true at all. I feel that if you are brought up around guns you are not going to be a gun-totting thug. I feel it makes you respect the gun. I feel that it is the individual and how they decide to take in the gun culture. Everyone could own a gun and be responsible with it. It is the group of irresponsible individuals who ruin it for everyone else. Some people think that carrying around a gun makes you a cool person and that it symbolizes strength and status. I feel that anybody should be able to own a gun, if its for protection or for recreational use. But at the same time I feel that if you own a gun it should be registered and you should always take a gun safety course before you buy one.
The reasons I feel that gun control gets out of control are because the wrong individuals feel a rational choice to settle a problem is to shoot someone over that problem. And most of the time these crimes are committed with illegal guns. Also if you are caught with a illegally purchased gun then strict punishment should be given. This day in age it is the norm to see guns everywhere in our culture. You see them in music videos, almost every blockbuster movie and a majority of the TV shows. The social conflict I feel is presented is between whether we should be able to own a gun or not. People think that all guns should be gotten rid of so that no one owns one. But the question I pose is how will we protect ourselves against the criminals who break in our homes or who rob us with their guns? On the other hand a criminal could look at this and state that this is all they have known, whether it be from being in a gang or always being around guns in the wrong environment. They may state that its hard for them to change and that they may have had to protect themselves when they were in a gang against other gangs and using a gun was the norm for them to do that.
But whatever your view maybe I still feel that all guns should be monitored and registered. You can own a gun and still live a safe and comfortable life. I don’t think eliminating guns from law abiding citizens will solve anything. If anything it would cause more problems and possibly more crime, because criminals would know we had nothing to protect ourselves with. So place stricter punishment on those who break guns laws and just enforce the laws that we do have more often and on a constant basis. We need to be on top of this problem in society now and stay on top of it.
