Erika Krute(FGCU) - Gun Control

Recently, the government has been trying to pass a law to ban the right to own a firearm for hunting or self- defense purposes. In the Constitution, the second amendment states that person has the right to bear arms. So why is the government trying to change the constitution when it was made to help and build the United States? A person should have the right to own their own gun if they own it in a legal sense.

Millions of people every year face life or death situations where the use of a gun is necessary. When someone breaks into your home when you have children and tries to hurt your family, what are you supposed to use to defend yourself? When put into a situation with someone who has a gun legally or illegally and is trying to use it to harm someone, what will a person have to try to protect them if they are not allowed to own a gun in their household?

Yes, guns cause more violence and probably do cause more deaths in the United States, but passing this law will not make this better because no one will listen. In Switzerland, when a male reaches a certain age they have to go through a 190 day course on how to properly use a gun. After this course is completed, they are allowed to keep the gun. This is to show the males to respect the power of a gun and all it entails. The Swiss and most likely other countries know the ideology of the situation. They know the cause and effect of what they are doing. Why don’t Americans see this? There are 9,000 murders a year in the United States involving firearms and 62 in Switzerland.

Banning the ownership of firearms will not change anything. What Americans need to realize is the meaning of the Second Amendment. It does not state that a person can use the gun to kill another human being for personal pleasure but to use for protection.

  1. Mr. Andoscia says:

Which bill is being proposed to ban firearms? The last firearms law out of this administration actually expanded the right to carry in National Parks. I’d be interested in seeing the legislation for banning firearms.
