Ana Escalante (FGCU)- A little Pill with a lot of Power
When it comes to the subject of birth control, there is a lot of controversy surrounding it. Some people accept it, while others believe it is just something else that can harm a women or a way of abortion. Although everyone has their own personal opinion, there are both pros and cons to this pill containing a lot of power.
The pill is the most common type of birth control contraceptive. One pill is taken each day. The first 21 have a combination of synthetic estrogen and progesterone hormones. The Pill stops ovulation, preventing the ovaries from releasing eggs. The hormones in the Pill prevent fertilization and the last 7 pills of a 28-day pack have no hormones and are called spacer pills.
Birth control can be very effective against pregnancy if it is used correctly. It could also make your menstrual cycle more regular, decrease cramps and acne, and it can make you less likely to get ovarian and uterine cancer, pelvic inflammatory disease, ovarian cysts and anemia. Some of the consequences include, not protecting you against STDs, the cost or copay can be between $15-50 per month, and not every woman is eligible to take birth control if they have certain health problems or are taking medication. It can also cause a lot of side effects such as nausea, increased appetite, headaches, and, very rarely, blood clots.
In my opinion, there are a lot of medications we take that have a lot of serious side effects. It is up to us if we decide to put these pills in our body and decide to take the risk of dealing with the side effects and using this pills for their purpose which is to reduce things like pregnancy, ovarian cysts etc.
