Serge Sanon (Edison) Teen Pregnancy

Teens who become pregnant have a lot to deal with. For decades our society tried hard to break the link between behaviors and consequences. The truth is, we always reap the fruits of our choices. Taking ten minutes out to think before engaging in five minutes of intercourse is always a beneficial idea.

Teen pregnancy results in a variety of consequences affecting the mother, baby, father, family members and society itself.

Statistics frame it well.

What is the future outlook for a pregnant teen? Fewer employment skills. They will be less likely to hold a job for more than six months; only a third will graduate from high school. Their children will also hold a greater chance of becoming pregnant as teenagers, dropping out of school, and living in poverty.
The U.S. has the highest rates of teenage pregnancy in the Western world. Every year around 750,000 teenagers will get pregnant. It costs us about $7 million annually. According to the National Campaign to prevent teen pregnancy, at least 75 percent of teen mothers end up on welfare after their first child.

The good news is that teen births have dropped by a third according to Teenpregnancy.org. With pregnancy prevention programs, this will drop even more in the years to come.

Parents need to be proactive in communication, education, assurance and nurturing love. Teens who feel a sense of self-worth are less likely to sleep with the first boy who says “I love you.”

I agree. today children have two working parents and lack the supervision they may need all the time. however if you love them and educate them. you can trust, they will think twice before have sex. I am pleased to hear the teen births have dropped.

I am also glad to hear that teen pregnancies have dropped. Especially when we now have television shows out such as “16 and Pregnant” and the movie “The Pregnancy Pact”. I believe these things are helpful to our teens because they can now get a real life example of what can happen after a bad mistake one night or a drunken misjudgment. I think teens need to have more education in pregnancy prevention and to learn various ways of protection. Especially since in the state of Florida, we mainly focus on abstinence, which we all know, is not that effective and has not made a huge difference. Teen pregnancy is a major dilemma, thank you for bringing up such an important issue.

It is good news that teen pregnancy rates have dropped. I wonder if tv is helping this statistic? Recently, I saw a show on MTV called 16 & Pregnant. It showed a few young teens who were pregnant and what their life was as they went thru their pregnancy and shortly after child birth. It definitely showed the hardships involved and the misconceptions most mothers had about their relationship with the fathers. Maybe shows like this will help educate teens on the reality of being a teen parent. Teen preganancy really does effect so many more people than just the parents. It has a huge ripple effect on thier parents, siblings, friends and other students.
