Alyssa Berkovitz FGCU: Abortion
Thousands of abortions occur everyday. Just in the United States alone, there are well over one million abortions per year. Abortions are extremely helpful for numerous reasons, starting with the fact that they are mostly saving babies from having troubled lives. Many anti-abortionists think that people who have abortions are too lazy to raise a baby. However, when you look at the facts, they show that 52% of women that undergo abortions are under the age of 25, which is an age that many people agree is too young to raise a baby. 73% of people who get abortions are single people/parents, so that baby would be born and live without a father figure in their life. Additionally, 48.2% of women who get abortions make under $30,000 per year, which would make the financial burden extremely hard on this family and their baby. It’s very possible that the new born may not get things that they need because their parents conceived the baby before they could afford to. While only 7% of abortions occur due to rape and/or health problems, anti-abortions need to take into consideration how many more young people would start saying they’d been raped to protect themselves from getting into trouble with family or friends. An estimated 43% of women will have at least one abortion by the time they are 45 years old. With a number like that, we also have to consider that abortion helps when it comes to the problem of overpopulating.
Aside from taking a birth control pill, there are three other options that women should choose to consider. First, the norplant, an item placed under the skin of one’s arm for five years. The hormone suppresses ovulation for at least two years, but has the risk of preventing implantation of the embryo. Second is the Depo-Provera, an injection one receives four times a year that prevents her from ovulating. Unfortunately, this hormone can also prevent implantation of the embryo. The next option is the morning after pill which is a large dose of a birth control pill.
If abortion was to become illegal, people would start resorting to using RU-486 and the lethal mix of Methotrexate and Misoprostol. RU-486 dangerously kills the baby and keeps it in the lining of the mothers uterus. If the baby is still alive after three attempts of using RU-486, the baby is surgically aborted. Methotrexate and Misoprostol are two drugs developed for cancer and ulcer treatment that can be used together to kill a baby. This is also incredibly dangerous because methotrexate is a chemotherapy, which can also kill the mother of the baby.
