Fathers by Taryn Hernandez(Edison)

There is a huge percentage of fathers that are not in their child’s or children’s life. I am actually meeting my father for the first time ever in 2 days so I thought this subject would be appropriate for a blog. We found each other on facebook about 3 months ago. Ever since I was little I always wondered where he was, what he looked like, what he did, and I am about to find out. Emotionally, I cant even begin to explain what I am feeling. I think I have felt every emotion since this process began. I am also watching a series called, Lost, through Netflix and in the show a father and son meet for the first time just before they get stranded on an island together. It may seem crazy, but even watching 2 actors reunite on a show is helping me with my nerves and deciding what to say when we talk. I proclaim that the legal system needs to be more stern with fathers when they begin to pay child support about being in their childs life. Possibly a workshop or lecture about how teens develop differently only having one parent, and decide if they want their child to mentally always wonder why they were not there. There is a group called the American Coalition for Fathers and Children that promotes equal rights by all parties affected by divorce or a breakup of a family.Involvement and dedication to a child needs to be the number one priority of a father. From a father’s point of a view on leaving their child, I can say that either money or not being ready is the only issue that is an excuse, although it is a poor excuse. Nothing should get in the way between a father/child relationship. The father had sex, and its the consequence, or miracle I should say, that a baby is being brought into that persons life. So after you have read this, please demand involvement from both parents in a child’s life and wish me luck this weekend!

SHORUQ BADAWI (EDISON) DRUGS AND ALCOHOL

The truth of matter is that drugs are killing our children, so people has been fighting against drugs and alcohols abuse in teen and adult. Drugs in school are significant problem. In one hand the teacher play the central roles in detecting and responding to in school substances among students. And on the other hand parents play the central roles out side schools.
According to alcohol abuse is a serious problem for teenager’s article. “Alcohol is the most commonly used “get way” drugs by children and adolescents.” which means that Alcohol is the number one used and drug among youth. It kills more teenagers than all other drugs combined, and it is the main reason in the three leading causes of death among youth: accidents, homicides, and suicides, a large number of teenagers who addicted alcohol. “Nearly four million young people suffer from alcohol dependence. Alcohol can cause serious and potentially life threatening problems for children and adolescents and can be precursor to other drugs use.
Therefore the best way to help these teen is to make them attend the Inpatient programs (short term) consist of three to four weeks of highly structured programming. Adolescents spend several hours a day in group therapy with six to eight peers. In group, adolescents rediscover the morals and values that were twisted and torn by their addiction. Furthermore, most adolescent inpatient programs have a school- based program, with regularly scheduled educational activities. An inpatient treatment program externally enforces structure in an effort to stabilize their routine and daily life. The hope is that they will internalize some of this structure, which helps to establish time management skills, self- regulation, and most important of all self- esteem. Furthermore, there are long term treatments, originally designed to treat hard- core addicts, offer highly structured, drugs- free residential programs lasting from three months to two years. Furthermore, there are many programs offer residential family program, generally consisting of two or three days of educational programs such as lectures and discussion groups. Therapy individual, group, and family, relapse prevention strategies, and continuing care planning. (Ketcham, 2003)

Rachel Stroemer (Edison): Traffic Cameras

Red light running has become a big problem. The nationwide study of fatal crashes at traffic signals in 1999 and 200 was about 20 percent of driver that were involved did not obey the signal. In 2007, almost 900 people were killed and about 153,000 were injured in red light running crashes. About half of the deaths involving red light running was a pedestrian or the car being hit by the red light runner. Traffic cameras are now being placed at the intersections of traffic lights. This is to help put a stop to red light running and keep the people on the road safe. The red light camera system is connected to the traffic signal and sensors that monitor the traffic flow at crosswalks or stop lines. This camera automatically takes a picture of vehicles that run the red lights. The camera is also triggered by a vehicle coming to the intersection that is going above the speed limit. The police or other officials view every picture to make sure the vehicle was in violation and verify there vehicle information. If someone is only under clear violation they will have a ticket mailed to them. These cameras including the installation can cost about $100,000. This maybe a good thing to invest in, considering a study has shown that motorist, on average, run a red light every 20 minutes at 3 out of 5 intersections. Also analysis of red light runners from 19 different intersections in 4 states found that 1,775 violations happened over 554 hours with a violation rate of 3.2 per hour per intersection.

Hanna Stroemer(Edison):Violence in U.S Vs. Violent Movies

Violence in the United States has always been a complicated issue. The belief that violence in movies encourages violence in young adults has grown as movies have become more and more violent. The committed crimes have gone down in America, 3,808.1 in 2006 to 3,667 in 2008, but that doesn’t mean people do not think more violently. There have also been statistics that during the “rush hours” for movie theaters with their viewers watching violent movies the violence drops in the area at the same time. This study only proves violent people are getting their fill of violence through movies and does not address correcting violent people. The best way to change violence is to start with America’s youth. Parents need to view movies before they allow their kids to watch it and depending if they feel their kid has the mental capacity to understand the movie and know it is just a movie then they can allow them to watch it. Parents should discuss with their kid what violence they should expect in the movie and after their child sees it talk to them about what they thought of it and talk about consequences of actions. With young adults parents and other adult figures need to be strict with violence when the young adult is around. They must get the young adult to fully understand the severity of violent actions and when they start down the path of violence show them you care by correcting what they are doing and warn them what that could lead to. When a person reaches the age 25 they have fully developed who they are and the best way to correct violence then is to give that person a reason to do better and find a more constructive way of handling issues.

SHORUQ BADAWI (EDISON) WAR ON IRAQ

One of today social issue is the War around the world. for example, the War in Iraq, which was launched by the United States and the United Kingdom on March 20, 2003 and continues to the present, was intended to be a preventative war against terrorism and Weapons of Mass Destruction.

One of the main social issue that the war is causing is our decrease in our economy because we  are wasting billions and billions of dollars on a war. In relation to the war in Iraq we America are spending over 800 billion dollars on the war while our State is cutting back on school budgets. however in my opinion it should be the opposites why shouldn’t we solve our problem with another country in away that will not harm us. and the 800 billion dollars that we are spending on the war could be spent on our education.  because in general war is never good for the economy.

also one of the biggest issue of the war is that children and teens are being brought up living in violence. Not only are they being surrounded by the fighting among their peers, but also by the wars among our countries. Finally. If at school and work Americans can solve issues by talking and working them out, then our government should be able to solve conflicts among other countries the same way.

Drunk Driving. FGCU Kyle Ostroff

Drunk driving is definitely a social problem everywhere because it happens at any time at any place. There has been 11,024 deaths alone this year in the United States. That is a rediculous number, and actually forty percent of deaths for people within the ages of 15 to 20 are from automobile collisions according to the CDC. If that doesn’t sound like a problem to everyone there’s something wrong because a stat like that should never even exist. Obviously there are laws to prevent teenagers from legally possessing, consuming, or driving under the influence of alcohol, but as reality proves, teen drinking and driving still does occur. According to SADD, Student Against Drunk Driving, nearly three-fourths of high school students consumed alcohol illegally and against the proven facts of danger prior to their graduations. As much fun as everyone has before and after their high school graduations everyone needs to know the dangers that they are risking when they decide to drink at a party then go drive home. I think drunk driving is one of the worst social problems in todays society because of how serious it has become.

Armando Herrera FGCU: Lower the Legal Age to Drink Alcohol

The legal age restriction to drink alcohol in the United States prior to July 17th 1984. At age 18 most of those who are students are graduating high school a time at which most teenagers illegally consume alcohol anyways. After turning 18 several other opportunities become available. You can buy tobacco products, enter more clubs, and even buy a shot gun or rifle. Our society decided that we trust our young adults with weapons but not with alcohol. There is a down side to being considered an adult at the age of 18, such as being tried as an adult in a legal court. The legal age to marry is even 18. The government feels it is also acceptable to train 18 year olds to kill as soldiers in the army. The United States reserves the right to draft males as young as 18 at a time of war. So looking back we allow our eighteen year olds to serve in the army, get married, be tried as an adult in court, smoke, and buy guns but not drink alcohol. Many places such as the Bahamas, Canada, and even most of Europe serve as examples that lowering the drinking age to 18 would only provide positive influences on the country. The unusually high drinking age of 21 set by the United States needs to be lowered to 18.

Manuel gonzalez (FGCU) poverty in America.

Something that i believe is not touch on alot is the povery there is in America. Each year the U.S. Census Bureau countes the number of “poor” persons in the U.S. In 2005, the Bureau found 37 million “poor” Americans. people  claim that these 37 million struggle with extream povery. but what do we difeine as poverty. is it being almost homeless, or not having enough food for yourself or for your famile. What is truly being poor here in america. I believe that when we look at it as a global issue being poor in america is not as bad as being poor in a 3rd world country. I believe is not even close to what these other countries have in poverty. Of course it needs to change and povery here in america is bad there needs to be a solution and help, but is not nearly as bad as other countries, and that is something we can take and work our way up from it.

Obesity In America - Dan Langfelder FGCU

Obesity in America is becomming rediculous ! nearly one third of adults in America are considered obese. As we know this is a big problem because obese people have a lower life expectancy and are at risk for many health problems.

Obesity’s impact on health can’t be denied.  Both men and women who have obesity generally have 50% to 100% higher mortality rates than those who are at a healthy weight. It can also lead to serious health conditions, often referred to as comorbidities or comorbid conditions which are commonly known as  type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, cancer, and even depression.  We are all aware that obesity  interferes with your quality of life. Beyond the physical implications, there’s often a stigma associated with being obese which can take an emotional toll as well. Alarmingly,Obesity in adults has increased by 60% just within the past twenty years and obesity in children has tripled in the past thirty years. As you can see healthcare has a high chance of going up and it will only get worse in less we do something now! Obesity-related deaths have elevated to more than 300,000 a year. The only thing that beats deaths related to obesity is deaths related to tobacco.

Overall  we can clearly see that obesity in America is a huge problem for our society . Not only can it be fatal and cause numerouse other diseases but it also cost alot of money to support these problems. To change obesity in America we would have to change our customs of fast food, amount of excersize, walk instead of driving, and much much more
