Steven O’Neill(FGCU) More Than a Game
Parents are always complaining that their kids aren’t getting enough exercise, spending too much time blankly staring at the television playing their dumb video games. But it’s just so hard for some kids to look away. Why is this? Maybe because video games have evolved into more of a live action simulator than an actual “game”. Recently my roommate hasn’t let our living room because he spends most of his day either sleeping or playing Call of Duty, because of the newest games release. This game is said to be one of the most realistic war games ever made. It has realistic graphics and all of the weapons on the game are real guns, used by our military. They have racing games, with cars that people only get to dream of driving other than in the game. It accelerates just like in real life, it’s the most realistic driving simulation game ever made. People all over the world interact and play against each other online, not knowing who their really playing, but just a screen name that the virtual world will now call them. They can fight a realistic war battle, or race super cars that now not just the very rich can own. They can play a soccer game, using their favorite club from England, against another person from Spain using a club from France. So maybe its almost understandable that kids don’t want to leave their television set. Its very scary to think about, but has technology completely taken away the need for real world interactions? Now days kids are thinking, “why would I want to go outside and throw a football around? I can do it with a controller better than I ever would be able to outside, without the need to move off of my couch.”
