Can Men and Women Be Just Friends?
So we all know the old saying “Men are from Mars and women are from Venus” so it it possible for men and women to be just friends? Many believe that the sexual tension that will most likely exist between and heterosexual male and female will most likely get in the way of this frienship thus making it something more. Cultural norms and the media have done little or nothing to help. A perfect example would be the Hollywood movie when Harry Met Sally convinced moviegoers nation wide that sex always comes between men and women, thus making friendship impossible. Television hasn’t helped either. I mean think about it, when ever we see a show with a male-female relationship it always either turns into a romance or one has feelings for the other. Yet, relationship experts have said that the belief that men and women can’t be friends comes from another era in which women were at home and men were in the workplace, and the only way they could get together was for romance. Now they work together and share sports interests and socialize together.This cultural shift is believed to have forth a new message. Though it may be tricky, men and women can successfully become close friends.
