Francesco Distefano (FGCU)- Obesity

Obesity is a very difficult subject. The causes o f obesity ar so varied and vary by individual. There are some reasons of why I think obesity in the United States is a social problem. First, in our country, our culture has become so passive in many ways. We have created in our homes couch potatoes, desk jockies, internet junkies, and video game addicts. Television is a drug choice for many people because sometimes it creates sedentary lifestyles. Also, we are so busy all the times. All day at school, all day at work, so we drive through, order delivery or take out. We don’t work for our food anymore as our last generations did. All of this things add up overtime to no exercise, terrible nutrition, and a horrible understanding of what good health is.  This is when the individual side of it comes in, statistics say that in the U.S. 58 million people are overweight, 40 million obese, and 3 million morbidly obese. Eight out of ten person above the age of 25 are overweight. Being obese brings many health issues. It’s known that 80% of type II diabetes is related to obesity or also that 70% of cardiovascular disease is related to obesity. By looking at this statistics, we, as a society should change our ways of living and some of our bad habits.

obesity is a huge problem in America. i completely agree that part of the reason is because of how society has changed. most people are to distracted by TV or video games. many of how children dont even go out to play anymore like they used to. even in the summer u rarely see as many kids playing outside anymore. children need exercise especially with all the junk food their eating. most parents work now so they dont have time to cook a real meal for their kids in some cases a child might have McDonald for dinner at least twice a week and that’s just not healthy. these fast food places is whats causing obesity. however that may not always be the case. like you said every one is different and their reason for obesity is different sometimes it really is an illness or it can be genetic.
