Francesco Distefano (FGCU)- Education
Education one really important social problem in our society. Education it’s not about “standards” and test scores, it’s about being able to apply knowledge, and creating life-long learners. You’ll never teach someone every fact, but you can steer them towards figuring out the facts for themselves. In the push for memorization and having quotas for passing standardized test scores, we’ve missed the point. Entirely. We turn off the best students and drive the best teachers to mediocrity. A comprehensive assessment test like the FCAT is a great example. Many teachers in high school spend most of their time talking and talking about this exam encouraging students to study and to concentrate so they can pass this “important” exam. I think some teachers are missing the understanding of school. I believe that learning or getting something out from a class is much more important than just passing a class with an A. This is one of many problems we have as a country in education. Another issues are the prices for students to study in a college or university. It’s really expensive, is it worth it? Is it worth spending thousands and thousands of dollars to study in a university when you can just get your own books and study by yourself? This is our education system and it might be good or bad but it’s in my opinion the only way to be someone in life.
