Death Penalty By Dominic Dijamco FGCU

The death penalty is very controversial now and will continue to be forever. The debate of putting someone’s life in the government’s hands is a very serious topic. In the past thirty years in theUnited States, there have been 1,167 executions. Capital punishment goes against the constitution as cruel and unusual punishment and should only be administered with undisputed evidence to criminals that have committed crimes so outrageous that they may be a threat in prison.

The death penalty goes against the constitution as cruel and unusual punishment; there is no humane way to put a person to death. If there is even the slightest chance that an innocent person will be wrongfully executed, then there is enough of a reason to abolish the death penalty altogether. In the united states between 1900 and 1985 there were 25 innocent people of capital crimes executed. There is a very good possibility that more innocent have been wrongfully executed but the evidence just hasn’t been found. No one wants to look for evidence proving someone innocent after they have been executed.

When discussing the death penalty, supporters of the death penalty bring up the point that killing the criminal is retribution to the victim’s family. While this may be true, it does not consider that the criminals have families also. Coming from a religious family, I have a hard time believing that two wrongs make a rite. Humans should not interfere Gods power of giving and taking life.Death for many criminals is an easy way out in my opinion. Death doesn’t allow the criminal to think about what they did. Death doesn’t allow the guilt manifest inside them throughout life in prison. Those who support the death penalty say that it prevents people from committing capital crimes. I am pretty sure that a criminal does not think “I’ll spend life in prison but I won’t die for this crime”. Those who commit capital crimes usually do not plan on getting caught. Another thing that the death penalty does not take in account is a crime of passion. Those who commit crimes of passion usually don’t care about the consequences when in the heat of committing the crime.

The death penalty has been around for too long and it is time to put an end to it. In this modern day and age the death penalty should be removed from American society. Life in prison without the option of parole is a more severe punishment to those who have committed capital crimes. I believe there is no humane way of killing a human and there for the death penalty should be unconstitutional. Although you may never forgive a criminal of the crime they have committed, reflect on word from a Catholic sister, Camille D’Arienzo, “…all life—not only innocent life—is sacred.”

underage drinking by Dominic Dijamco FGCU

The drinking age should not be lowered. Most people under 21 are not responsible or mature enough to handle alcohol. Most high school students have tried alcohol, and about 60% of high school and underage college students drink regularly. This high percent of underage drinkers poses major threats to society, including the fact that more teens die in alcohol-related car crashes than from any other cause. Drinking also contributes to other types of teenage deaths like suicide and drowning. As a result the rate of teenage alcoholism is very high in the United States. Some see underage drinking as a harmless activity, but the consequences need serious attention. Some parents allow underage drinking to occur at there homes and take away the keys so no one drives. Yes this can be safe for that night but encouraging that underage drinking is ok, can have a harming impression on the teen. Parents who allow underage drinking are setting bad examples for many. It is also a insult to the others parents who forbid drinking.

Should Religion really play such a big role in todays society?- Mike Myregaard

Religion is expanding all over the world. More and more people today are trying new religions. Kids today grow up to be more independent, and therefore make their own choices of what religion they want to be associated with. Because of Religion’s rapid growth throughout the world, they have the power to control a lot of things. Some of these problems I believe the church should have never gotten involved in. There is a seperation of church and state for a reason, and it needs to stay that way. The church cannot get involved in some of the things that the government wants to do. A government does not always do things the right way. Government leaders to not always make ethical decisions. But it is not the church’s responsibility to correct these mistakes. They should be worrying about comforting their parishioners in these tough times, and bringing in more and more members. Religion is important though. It gives a person a sense of stability and comfort. at the same time, i believe that the church should be concerned with things that only they can change. They cant be getting involved in governmental matters where they are not welcome. When you bring God into a situation the entire scenario changes. It makes you wonder if what you are doing is truly the right thing to do. The church cannot be putting this burden upon our government. They are two separate organizations that should stay out of each others way. Thats they way it has been for many years, and hopefully many more to come.

Racism by Christina Thomas (FGCU)

Racism is a degrading way to set aside groups of people by the ethnicity and has been an on going event for many years.  The term racism is used in some countries and in some circles to describe hostility and discrimination directed against a group for virtually any reason. Racism occurs even in the carefully delineated sense that has governed the study of its history. The Holocaust and decolonization may have permanently discredited what can be called as overtly racist regimes, but this good news should not be inflated into a belief that racism itself is dead or even diminishing. Inequalities of groups of people are associated with what are taken to be deep-seated marks of inferior. The legacy of the past racism directed at blacks in the United States is more like a bacillus that people have failed to destroy, a live germ that not only continues to make some people ill but also retains the capacity to generate new strains of a disease for which people have no certain cure. If racism is not depleted, it is less intense of a problem today than it was back a few years ago.

Becky Broome (FGCU) Adultery

For centuries society has considered adultery to be something bad. People grow up understanding that this is wrong and should never happen. It is safe to say that adultery being bad has become a norm of society. We have to take a step back and look at whether this is true or not. I personally feel as though you should never commit adultery. Putting that all aside though I can see benefits of adultery. Why do women actually commit adultery? It makes since that every women would want their offspring to be stronger and better so that her children can take care of her in her old age. On the other hand they want a man that will stay with her and take care of her and the child. It is obvious that she can’t achieve this with the same man because men do not possess both qualities. So how does she accomplish her wants? Adultery. She sleeps with the better man to get his seed then convinces the other man to take care of the baby and her. So now for the other side. Why do men cheat? Well it is in the nature of a man to want to spread his seed. Committing adultery is the way men can spread their seed the fastest. So adultery isn’t that bad at all. We are not only ensuring the existences of our race but the betterment of it also.

gun control by Dominic Dijamco FGCU

The United States is the leader in per capita gun deaths among industrial nations. This has sparked the debate of the right to bear arms. This has resulted in gun control laws at the federal and state levels that are trying to reduce crime and violence by restricting private gun ownership. Supporters of gun control would like even tighter restrictions. They face strong opposition from those trying to protect what they view as the right to own and bear firearms. These rights should not be taken away from the americaan people. Guns don’t kill people people kill people. The majority of crimes are commited with illegal guns. Those looking to commit a crime will usualy find a way to  get what they want and breaking the law isnt going to stop them.People will always find a way to get guns if there banned also. Making the right to bear arms illegal will just create a dangerous black market in guns possibly making the problem worse. This could possibly result in only criminals having guns. Maybe there is hope of this problem being solved by technology. There is a new  idea of a “smart gun” that will function only for its authorized user is appealing to many, but the technology is in its beginning stages.

Manuel gonzalez(FGCU Drunk driving )

By now we all know how bad drinking and driving can be. But yet no matter how bad it gets or how many tickets people might get, or how many people may die, lots of people just keep on drinking and driving. Especially teens so wanted to get some facts out there to give you and idea of how bad this is. I can start by given a very scary statistic that says that Every 22 minutes someone dies in an alcohol-related motor vehicle accident. And According to the latest statistics, the prospect of you or someone in your family that can be  involved in an alcohol-related motor vehicle accident is more than just very likely …it’s a almost certainty. also a family of five, the chance that someone in that  family that someone will find themselves in an alcohol-related motor vehicle crash in their lifetime, is an  200 percent. Can you Imagine, a 200 percent chance that you or someone in your family will either cause, or be an innocent victim to, a drunk driving accident. It’s horrible statistic. But one thing is for certain that almost know one is pressure to drink and drive is something that just happens someone that is doing it just gets pulled in because of the pressure they had to drink. Its there option to drive so if its a choice why do we still do it knowing it can be so dangerous is the question. well the only thing left to do its educate everybodythat does it before they experience something very serious or even before they take there own lifes.

Jonathan Hohn (FGCU) Ergogenic aids

Ergogenic aids refers to a substance that can increase the capacity bodily or mental labor, by eliminating fatigue symtoms. Be Stronger, be faster, be better. This is stressed when competing as an athelete. getting an ‘edge’ is what they call it. I am speaking about Anabolic steroids. These substances are are banned world wide in sports. A gain in strength, speed, and endurance are ahieved when taking this substance. Anabolic steroids are man made substances that alter a male or females hormones. Steroids are used for more then just sports, late puberty can be resolved with steroid help, and gaining back muscle mass because of disease are common resaons for steroid usage. Atheletes and body builders often use Anabolic steroids to gain atheletic performance.Although using them is not safe at all, people still persist to use the substances. There are many side effects to using this subtance.Acne and cysts are constantly an issue when using this drug. Cases show acne can get so bad that it can permanantly damage the skin. Another side effect of Anabolic steroids are the growth in breast size in women , and the shrinking of testicles on men. Woman can also develope unwanted hair growth and also might have to deal with their deepening at the same time. Heart attack and heart problems can also arise with steroid use.Anabolic steroid not only changes one’s appearance, it also changes a person mood and behavior.People who use steroids tend to develope a more aggressive personality. They will tend to lash out and feel enraged quicker and more frequently then the average person. This can be life threatning in situations where a level head is needed.
When trying to gain muscle mass you should not use steroids because the development of the muscles happens to fast. The tendons and ligaments that your muscles are attacked to will not grow as fast as your muscles when using the drug. Therefore, injury is bound to happen. Steroids aren’t the way to go there just to damaging to a person body and health. Hopefully the number of people using Anabolic steroids will keep falling.

Jonathan Hohn (FGCU)Smoking Cigarettes vs.Chewing Tobacco

Smoking cigarettes vs. chewing tobacco

As we all know cigarette smoke is very harmful to the human body. That being said people are turning to chewing tobacco because they think that it is less harmful then smoke.  If  you  thought  that then your 100% wrong. Spitting tobacco when used is placed inside the lower region of the mouth usually between the bottom lip and the lower gum, this is called ‘’dipping’’. It is a moist shredded form of tobacco that is sold in tins. Just like smoking cigarettes ‘’dip’’ effects the cardiovascular system and is known for giving heart disease, stroke, and high blood pressure. The consequences for dipping tobacco are very nasty they include; yellowing if the teeth, loss of bone in jaw, tooth abrasion, gum and tooth disease, and gum recession. Some see this as a quick nicotine fix but in reality a quick fix is not worth losing your entire jaw. This is a social problem because most people who start dipping are influenced by their peers. Peer pressure plays a big role when hanging out with your friends. That’s why the ‘’live above the influence’’ ads are making an effort to try and reach out to young people before they get caught up in long lasting addictions.
