It's such an interesting subject and it is definitely helpful in understanding a person of another religion. I agree that religious ignorance leads to religious intolerance. I don't think that the importance of religion in history is ignored in classes though, just their doctrines. They usually state the reason why something happened is because of "religious reasons".
