Armando Herrera(FGCU): Prescription Drug Abuse
According to the Office of National Drug Control Policy the rate of prescritption drugs being abused is continuing to drastically increase. The main concern is teenages experimenting with narcaotics and fatally over dosing. Teens are experimenting with many types of prescription drugs such as pain killers like oxycodone, depressants and even steriods. People are becoming involved with a variety of these chemically manufactured drugs for a variety of reasons. Popular reasons teens give for using prescription drugs are to have fun, lose weight, fit in, or even study harder. These drugs are sometimes easily accesible by looking in a family member’s or friend’s medicine cabinet. The drugs are also being sold on the streets in the ghettos and suburbs. The prescription pill epidemic is wide spread through out the country. A 2006 National Survey on Drug Use and Health showed that among all youths aged 12 to 17, 6% had tried prescription drugs for recreational use within the last month. This was a statistic found on one of the many web sites set up to inform parents of the dangers of prescription pills. The web sites really try to focus to inform those who abuse legal drugs that it is potentially dangerous to ones health. Doctors have to be careful when filling prescriptions because there are so many negative reactions a person could have to one of the chemical in the drug. A person could easily die by taking a medicine that is keeping someone else alive. The problem is a major concern among youths, so untill they are made aware of the consequences of abusing prescription drugs the statistics and death count will continue to rise.
