Anxiety: A real diagnosis? Pills for everything? (FGCU) The Students Voice

This post is a question I have had for a long time.  Is anxiety a real issue?  Was this word invented to make an excuse for being stressed but know we have a medical term for it?  When was this disorder invented?  Did civil war soldiers stop during the fight and saw, OMG im having an anxiety attack?  I dont think so.  I understand being nervous and dealing with every day issues, but people these days always turn to a pill to get through their problems.  This is not only anxiety but things like depression, nervousness, and all other mentally related illnesses.  I think technology is great that we have found cures to these things but in the future are we all going to be zombies on medication?  Picture it now, everyone in the world smiling due to taking there happy pills.  I do think that these can really help someone with dark problems, but I see people self prescibing themselves and saying “I have anxiety” more and more every day.  Or my favorite, “I cannot pay attention is school,” so I have A.D.D. (attention deficent disorder) or what I like to say is that you just don’t give a damn what your teaching is saying so get a pill that tweaks you out so you pay attention.  Also, people are gulliable, put a commercial on television about a disorder and people are lining up off the streets beacuse they realted to the commercial.  Even though before this was seen, they did’nt think twice about it.  I understand the rational choice of the medication, but it just seems like there are other ways around it then medicating on self with pills.

I do see your point, and agree, that people are over medicated in today’s world, and that the world of the future is going to be worse than what today is. I am concerned that you don’t necessarily understand these mental illnesses completely. Anxiety is a real disorder where people going through the attack have symptoms that mimick a heart attack. They have chest pains and trouble breathing all the same things that happen when someone is having a heart attack. I do believe that people back in the time of the civil war did suffer from panick attacks just like people do today, but it was something that wasn’t discussed. Some of these people can’t leave their homes because their anxiety is that bad. It is really not something that should be down played.

I do agree with you. People today have many resources to see disorders and then think that what they feel mimicks whatever the disorder is. Also going beyond just what is seen on TV, people are able to take what they are feeling and look it up on the internet. Doctors and nurses must be bombarded with people trying to self diagnose. Imagine someone trying to self diagnose themselves for an illness and then trying to treat with herbal rememdies. Going beyond that imagine a reaction to an herbal remedy because of self diagnoses. Not everyone is as smart as you or myself to take what they see and read on the internet or TV with a grain of salt.
