Stop HIV and AIDS By: Brian Blomberg
How do you feel when I say that there are an estimated 1 million people walking around in the United States with one of the most deadly diseases? Since HIV was discovered in 1981 in the United States more than 500,000 people have died from AIDS and over a million are currently living with it. Some more statics from avert.org say that 75% of the people diagnosed with HIV are men. One very sad statistic is that in 2007 there were 3,792 children under the age of 13 with HIV. This is very hurtful because these kids did nothing wrong to deserve this kind of disease. These children could have got the HIV through breast feeding, labor, pregnancy, or delivery. Parents need to make the right decisions and get checked for these types of diseases and not have kids if you have this disease. From these irresponsible parents our society is getting hurt from it and the number of people with HIV is going to continue to grow in the years to come.
This is a major social problem in the United States and worldwide. As a society we have become careless and not cautious with what we do. I feel that this is another major social problem that needs to be addressed at a young age in our school systems. We need to get kids to want to get tested and not afraid, to be tested. Everyone’s mindset needs to get away from not caring about others but to get tested so you are not harming anyone else. If we develop programs in schools now we will be able to minimize this disease instead of keep letting the numbers grow. The easiest way to prevent the spread of HIV would be to use a condom, for example FGCU gives out free condoms to students. I think this is a great way to help stop the spread of this terrible disease. I think this same idea should be in high schools too and not just colleges. Many young teens sometimes don’t use them because of the expense. This social problem needs to be addressed by our society as soon as possible before things get worse.

I think you are right that people with AIDS should not have children. I once read an article about a group of people who do not believe that HIV causes AIDS. The article focused on one woman with HIV that had a child die of AIDS and still did not believe HIV was the cause. People can be really ignorant when it comes to things such as AIDS. It makes me mad that in society we see people with AIDS as promiscuous or promiscuous people as having AIDS when in reality it can happen to anyone and we all need to be careful.

I think the problem is that some people do not know that they have HIV, so they unknowingly pass it on to their partners or children. There is such a big stigma against having HIV in our society, so many people are afraid to get tested or tell others that they have the disease. If a child is tested an found to have HIV, he or she may be alienated and ostracized by his or her classmates. There is a lot of ignorance about HIV/AIDS and how it is spread, so I do think it is a good idea to educate children and adults so they can be more informed and make choices accordingly.

Should the fact that one has or has not done something wrong matter when it comes to disease? Does one “deserve” to have a deadly disease based on their actions. Especially when their actions are no different than the vast majority of people who do the same thing without contracting the disease?
