Media Violence By: Brian Blomberg
6. October 2009 by student.
Have you ever thought about how you are going to raise your kids? Many of us haven’t but one of the most hurtful things to a child is media violence. Media violence includes everything from movies, video games and what is viewed on television. I think that violent video games are a major social problem in our country. Think about all of your younger brothers, cousins, and kids you know, I’m sure most of them play video games that are way too inappropriate for them.
Professor Huesmann argues that “From over fifty years of evidence show that media violence causes children to behave more aggressively and affects them as adults in later years.” There have been many studies to show how when children watch media violence they become more aggressive in the real world. For example, in 1963 several professors took 100 preschool children and split them into groups. Three of the groups watched a show where there was shouting and someone was getting hit by someone. The fourth group did not see any of that and then when they went to play, the three groups that watched the violence became aggressive while playing. One shocking statistic by the Kaiser Family foundation in 2005 reported that children from the ages 8 to 18 spend more time in front of a computer, television or gaming system than anything else besides sleeping on a daily basis. This is a major social problem! This not only is causing children to become aggressive but why do you think our country has become so obese. Exactly, the lack of exercise that our young children are getting today is due to parents letting they children just play video games all day long. In our society today many parents like when their young children are playing video games because it keeps them quiet for a few hours. But, is that really a good thing? No it’s not because this time is actually making them more aggressive and violent in years to come if they are playing these violent video games. Video game violence is a major social problem which needs to be stopped if you the parent become more responsible and don’t allow young children to play these violent games.
