[Chazmen McCarter: Edison] Will Changing The Dress Code In High Schools Decrease Bullying

Many parents, teachers and authoritative figures have been pushing for all high schools to change their dress code policy to a uniform manner. The main issue is, many teachers and parents are arguing, by changing the school’s dress code, bullying will decrease in many schools. I believe that while bullying is a major issue in many schools. This is not the way to solve it. Students need the right to express themselves; also it would cause an increase in behavioral issues and loss of time during class because students are uncomfortable looking like each other instead of expressing themselves. Changing the way a student dress will not affect bullying, students will only find other ways to bully other children. A necessary step to end bullying is to inform teachers on how to notice bullies, give the necessary consequences to the bully, and inform the parents. While, bullying is a major problem in high schools, changing the dress code will not help the situation, but only make it worse.

Does the research support your hypothesis? Look it up.

At Fort Myers Middle Academy in 2003, they made the decision to change their dress code to uniforms. Other factors contributed to the change, but a main focus was bullying. In 2005, they had reported that bullying had not decreased, but had increased throughout the school. To resolve the bullying issue they adopted “One on One.” It was a confrontation program in which the bully and the victim both met with the principle and/or parent to solve the situation. The bully was confronted about the situation and was told to stop the bullying or further consequences would take place. The program succeeded in decreasing bullying throughout the school, although bullying was not totally resolved, there was a vast decrease in bullying from 2003-2006.

some students use something that their bottoms are showing.some go to school with their pajamas and with their underwears hanging out. for me, that is just inappropriate.

I am thirty-six years old and never went to a school where there were uniforms. Were there children who bullied? Yes, but they were reprimanded and believe it or not other students stepped in and helped the kids out who were being bullied. I feel the problem today is the teachers are so worried about fitting everything in their schedule the school boards are demanding that they have little time to pay attention. There should be professional training on bullying awareness for any employee of a school system that is working with the kids and the punishment should be harsher as well as the child doing the bullying having to enter into therapy sessions with and without their family members. Professionals need to find out where all of the hatred and anger is coming from to be able to fix it.
