Angela Memoli (Edison): Beauty

Our standards on beauty have changed over the years. At one point in our past, a woman in shorts was a new thing and was very sexy. Now it has changed a little, not only is it short shorts, but lush lips and full eyelashes. In America we have a thing for big breasts. Girls have watched this and looked for ways to look good, thinking that they have to, to get attention. From the New York Times, more girls don’t want their mom’s to cut their, they want for lush, $50 haircuts. Highlights are also a big thing right now, costing around $150 highlights at some places.

“Four years ago, a survey by the NPD Group showed that, on average, women began using beauty products at 17. Today, the average is 13—and that’s got to be an overstatement. According to market-research firm Experian, 43 percent of 6- to 9-year-olds are already using lipstick or lip gloss; 38 percent use hairstyling products; and 12 percent use other cosmetics.” – New York Times. In some cases, looking good is more important than school. This can be bad, since we are in troubled times. You need to have schooling to get a job and just looking good isn’t going to cut. Maybe if we don’t force beauty on our children then maybe they will force more on school then looking good. Looking good isn’t everything.

David Ramos (Edison) Reply to Obesity

Americans in general live fast lives and are unaware of the damage that can be done after a period of time. Fast Food companies target the youth and minorities through ad’s showing the quick easy way to get satisfied. It’s all about pleasure. Obesity is a disease that feeds on depressed people that look for that comfort some others may receive through love or work. I also believe that in this time it will progress to high numbers. Now a days people are looking a cheap way to eat hence the Dollar MENU!!!!!!!!

Nick Forster (Edison) Oprah Sucks

Oprah did a special segment on her show. She set up real life public scenarios were people were in need. For example, a women being pushed around by her husband; using actors of course. The plan was to see if anyone would come to these peoples rescue. It was a great Idea in theory, but the analysis sucked. Let me explain two of the situations she set up and then i’ll get into why I think oprah and her crowds reaction was ridiculous.

First, Oprah had a black couple fighting in a park, the man was being violent, pushing etc. and It seemed none of the public cared to get involved. Finally, one citizen stepped in and attacked the man, breaking up the fight.

In the second scenarios, she took a drunk white girl with a baby (acting of course) and had her try to drive a car. Everyone around freaked out and tried to stop her. There was little hesitation.

O.k. First of all I want to address the first situation with the couple. The woman who broke up the fight was commended and the people who didn’t get involved were looked down upon. Infact, oprah brought the woman in and everyone praised her. That woman was brave enough to endanger herself and that’s fine, but she could have been killed. In downtown fortmeyers last year an officer was shot in the face while getting between a man and a woman. The point is people should not be looked down upon for watching out for their personal safety. They should have called the authorities and it’s very possible some of them did. What she did in my opinion was dangerous and Oprah commended that dangerous act.

Second, oprah compared the two scenarios and brought up the issue of race. She basically said, people were so quick to help the white girl but not the black girl. That is the biggest pile of ignorant crap i’ve ever hear. These are two different situations, one involves a violent male and the other involves a weak woman who poses no threat but to herself and her baby. It is so much easier to stop that woman. Oprah is a horrible person, the end.

Jany Rivero(Edison) If we like each other… “Let’s just get married” !

A real lasting relationship takes more than most people think. Nowadays, everyone is just doing “whatever”. And I say “whatever”, because honestly they do things the crazy way. They are getting married just because they feel passion, and most of the time it doesn’t work. When a man and a woman meet, and they like each other…. there’s a lot to share and learn from each other. You want to marry someone you really know and love, not a total stranger that “you love to death and is the love of your life”. Marriage is not only based upon love. There has to be communication, trust and the will to understand any situation and help each other. If you are going to marry somebody , you want to make sure that person is true to you; and you need to know if you really want to do it.

Jany Rivero (Edison) Obesity

I know is very hard for a human being to resist to what he likes. But, sometimes we have to do it for our own good. Mostly every individual in the United States is either obese or overweight. Fast food is one of the main reasons why; I believe. We all live a very busy life, and it’s easy for us to stick to fast food. It is cheap, quick and convenient. We’d rather spend some money instead go home and cook a healthy meal. It’s not only adults or older people, but even teenagers and young kids are becoming obese. We need to do something about this, because we are certainly putting at risk our lives. Obesity increases your cholesterol and it puts you at a higher risk for high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke and many other complications. I am sure that you “the reader” cam do something. I also know you want to be healthy and live long, but let me tell you this: ” you gotta work for it” . I tried it and I lost 15 pounds and I felt so much better.

Joel Murray(Edison) The Importance of Education

In this day and age, it is of extreme  importance to get an education.  In a economy where things aren’t so great, people are being laid off left and right. Jobs that do seem to pay well have higher standards.  For an example I am a student of-course and i need a part time job.  I came across an ad from Tire Kingdom I believe but their basic requirements  stated that you need at-least a Associate Degree to even be considered.  Since when do you need a degree to sell tires? Its ridiculous.  I remember growing up that a High School diploma or GED meant something. It seems now that an A.A. degree is now equivalent to a diploma.  The only way it seems that one could survive and maybe live comfortable is not only just getting any degree

Angela Memoli (Edison): Bad times

While looking at the NewPress newspaper, I see that most of it is stories of robberies in the area. Fort Myers man arrested for smashing a car window”, “Fort Myers fast-food restaurant robbed” and what’s even worse, “Fort Myers man allegedly tortures and rapes woman”. Have we really come to this? Has society gotten so bad, that we have no other choice, but turn to stealing and taking not just things, but people and doing things to them that they don’t want to do? Just because things are bad now, doesn’t mean that people have the right to do such things.      Some people may argue that the robbers were looking for things to sell, so they can feed themselves and their loved ones. Some of that maybe true, but they still have no right to break into someone’s home, car and anything that is that person’s or company’s. The torture and rape of a woman doesn’t go with the above. There is no way to justify that action. With the robberies, you can argue with, but beating and rape, no, there isn’t argument.Things aren’t that bad that people should be going out of their way to do such acts. As a society, we can do better. We can get out of this rut and have things run smoothly again. If you think about robbing someone or someplace, think of the people who will be involved in it. They may not be able to get another item that you stole or the money you stole them a store may close it down thus making more people lose their jobs. We are in bad time, but that doesn’t mean that taking things that aren’t your is right.

natalie micciulli(edison) others make you the way you are

Growing up, ive dealt with a lot. i remember waking up in the middle of the night to screaming and yelling, and things being thrown around. I even remeber a window breaking. My oldest sister was a drug addict, and a very rebellious teen.  She would come home very late, messed up on whatever, and my parents and her would fight all night. There were numerous times when even the cops were called. My sister is almost 30 years old now, and she is still having problems. But growing up and seeing what drugs could do to you life, changes the person you are. I have never even experimented with drugs, and i do not drink. Seeing how much a substance can change yourself absoultely scares me. and i would never want to put my parents through anything like what my sister put them through. If ever, any of my friends decided to do drugs, i think of them differently. i dont understand how getting messed up makes your nights fun? All my life it looked like a disaster, not fun at all. My big sis has made a big influence on my life, and i know i will never have the want for any drugs. People need to open their eyes and see what they are doing to their body, minds, family, and friends. If you care enough about yourself and your loved ones, you wont get yourself into drugs. There are so many people that die becuase of drugs, have no home, no family, have nothing, because of drugs. There is just no good that comes out of it, so it time to become a drug free world.

Natalie Micciulli(edison) swine flu!

All over the news there are scares about the swine flu! Swine flu is common in swine and rare in humans. People who work with swine, especially people with intense exposures, are at risk of catching swine influenza if the swine carry a strain able to infect humans. However, these strains rarely are able to pass from human to human. Rarely, SIV mutates into a form able to pass easily from human to human. Rarely enough, it happened!  It a pretty big scare because there have been a few fatalities. Even though it is scary, i think the media is making it out to seem a lot worse then it already is. Either way, we should all be washing our hands a lot, and if anyone knows somebody with a even a cold, you should stay away.

Natalie Micciulli(edison)death

Death is such an unkown world, that nobody is really certain about. When everyone thinks about dying, we think that we go to heaven and look down upon our loved ones still on earth. People even have claimed that they have died, went to heaven, and jesus himself, sent them back to earth because it “wasnt their time”. This could all the real, but do we all believe it? If you dont have a god, then where do you go after death? Its a scary thought just to think that one day your living a wonderful life, and then, bam, its over, its nothing. You end up just being a body in the ground.  But what happens, if your not just a body in the ground? Maybe after you die, you become new again. You become a somebody or something else, in a new world. Death could also be scary, what if death is eternal darkness? Maybe it could be that your body has gone, but your soul is still very alive! Death is such a scary thought, and we will never really know anything about it, until death finds us.
