I have a one year old son and I completely disagree with spanking. In fact if there were a case that your child hurt someone intentionally wouldn't it be pointless to do the same thing to him as punishment? You are saying that he cannot hit but how is he supposed to understand that if mommy or daddy is hitting too. I know that if my son did something wrong and say I slapped his hand he is going to think that it is ok and either hit me back or copy my action another time. There are other ways of disciplining a child be creative you will get through to them you just cant give up. My parents used to take all my stuff away until my room was empty. It made me want to change my attitude thats for sure.

There are other ways to discipline a child that do not involve violence. People need to learn disciplining techniques that are effective and do not involve power displays like spanking.

I'm not commenting on the legalization of spanking, mind you. Spanking is a culturally defined thing. But for all future parents out there, there is no reason that I can think of to justify hitting a child. Violence is a failure on the parent's part to think through appropriate discipline.
