No one should ever disagree with your statement that Teachers are crucial to our existence and future and that good teachers should be paid at a higher salary level than they currently are. A career as a teacher is not a career choice with the goal of becoming rich. Typically people become teachers for exactly why you are considering it. A passion for children, academia and the sharing of knowledge is the driving force for a career path in teaching. I think the same holds true for other professions such as law enforcement and fire fighting. These civil positions never pay enough for a lavish lifestyle, and they put their lives on the line every day. Fortunately, in teaching as well as law enforcement and fire fighting, a higher educational level will bring a small increase in salary, and the opportunity for extra work such as summer school and tutoring for teaching and off-duty services for police and firefighters are optional ways to increase income.
