Kyle March (FGCU) Affirmative Action Only Doing an Injustice

“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character”, these are obviously the words of Martin Luther King Jr’s “I Have A Dream” speech. The man who led the revolution of civil rights says it right there that he wanted all people to be treated and judged equally, regardless of skin. However, why today are we still using the process of affirmative action to give out jobs? I did not know King obviously, but based on his speech he just wanted equal opportunity, not pity. He did not want african-americans to get jobs or admitted into schools just because of their skin or just to meet a quota. He actually stood for equal opportunity.

However, the idea of affirmative action does not only apply to African-Americans, but to all minorities. Why should the most qualified person not always get the job? I do not care if the person is from India, Pakistan, or the Czech Republic, the best person should get the job, but it seems that we are to caught up in meeting quotas.  The idea of affirmative action is supposed to prevent racial discrimination, but really it is racial discrimination in itself. There was problems in Michigan involving affirmative action in the schools. Many people who read this will take it the wrong way and if so I apologize, but to me there is no doubt that affirmative action is racial discrimnation in disguise.

  1. Mr. Andoscia says:

In a country where the best qualified applicant always gets the job Affirmative action will not be necessary. However, we don’t live in such a culture yet. So what’s the alternative?

  2. Kyle March says:

There is alternative to this that I can think of. I beleive that we should already be at that point where the best applicant gets the position regardless of race.
