Angela Memoli(Edison): Abortion Debate

Abortion, something that has been talked about for years now. It was even brought up in the presidential election. People have been going back and for on this matter and the churches have been coming in as well. From what I have seen, there is pro-choice and pro-life, two topics that make you choose what to do. Most churches are pro-life, they see a life that they could get into thier church and get money from. Other churches like pro-choice, a person can use if they want the child or not.

I was reading an article in the New York Times talking about how in Brazil, a nine year old girl was raped by her step-father and aborted twins. The nation is in a up-roar about it, but the doctors say that there has been a lot more of these cases happening over the years.

I’m not against churches.  believe that everyone has there choice on what they want oto belief and in the bible it says God gave of free will to choose. So, isn’t abortion something we should choose on.

Reading this article, I came across what the a Brazilian archbishop said about this, I was in shock. “The law of God is above any human law,” said José Cardoso Sobrinho, the archbishop, who argued that while rape was bad, abortion was even worse.”

So, does that mean that rape is okay as long as the female does get an abortion even if she is under 12? What has society come to? There was a time when abortion was against the law and girl/woman still got them, even at the risk of their own lives. In the movie, “Dirty Dancing”, one of the dancers got pregent and had to get rid of the child or she wouldn’t be able to work. She almost died, because the person who did the abortion didn’t know what he was doing and just wanted the money.

So, will we become a society where is it okay to get raped as long as you don’t get an abortion, where young girl have to face life with a child they don’t want, who will not understand why its mother hates him/her or will be a society where it is wrong to rape anyone and it isn’t looked on to get an abortion, weather it was a rape case or the mother knows that she can’t raise the child the way things are. I choose the second choice. What about you?
