Jianna Henegar(FGCU):Elderly Abuse is Overlooked
1. February 2009 by student.
Elderly abuse is overlooked and rated. It is a growing social problem worldwide and seems to have a high prevalence in America. Abuse is not only physical abuse, it is emotional and can be verbal abuse as well. Many people don’t like to accept the fact that the reality of elderly abuse often happens in vulnerable situations. Many of these victims are not able to take care of themselves and sometimes are deteriorating in ways that affect their mental faculties. This is why the abusers attack these elderly victims. One example of an elderly abuse is taken place in London. A community trust reported that three staff members in a nursing facility physically abused the elderly people in their homes. The nurse was imprisoned in Saudi Arabia for murder and was convicted of stealing money from a 79 year old patient while nursing her patient. At the nursing home, Beech House, the nurses would slapp, verbally threaten, bathed the patients in cold baths, withhold drinks, and also tied the patients up. The sad part about this kind of abuse is that the public doesn’t believe that caretakers abuse these elderly people who are on their deathbeds.
